So i was going around a corner from stop light and heard a weird grinding. It seemed to have stopped after the trans shifted. I reached my destination. When leaving i backed up. It felt funny and i heard the noise again. Pulled out into traffic and it did it again. Nasty grinding noise. . It seems to do it from 2nd gear. I babied it home steady freeway speeds never heard it again.
I wont say what i think it is so i dont bias opinions. I parked it and havent driven it since. Its a 97 z71 4l60e 211k rear end went out recently too

Sounds like the snap ring that holds the output shaft in the t-case let go.
Pull the driveshaft and see if you can pull the output shaft out . It shouldn't have much play if the snap ring is still gpod.

ill check. Wouldn't that be nice! But im afraid its a bad sun shell as OLDBLUE98 mentioned.
I did have it in 4wd and backed up another time and it felt weird. Like a pop. I hope its something like this. How do you fix it if it is?
I dont mind tearing it down and rebuilding a transmission. . Infact i enjoy that kinda work. I just hate pulling and installing.

It's pretty simple. Pull the tail shaft off the back of the case. The snap ring will be sitting in a groove next to the bearing. The original snap ring doesn't have ears like a typical snap ring. I used a couple small flat head screw drivers to pop the old one off.
Here's an upgraded snap ring with ears that will be easier to install than the original.

Best bet, like I said. Pull the the driveshaft and grab the output shaft and pull on it to see how much play it has. When mine broke, it didn't completely fall apart. It was "stretched" and didn't keep the output shaft right.
It's 4 bolts that hold the tail shaft on.and may have rtv on it to see it .
With the shaft removed, you can't get a good at it.

I just went and started the truck for the first time since I parked it and I was playing around with it screwing around going between every gear and I got a funny noise going into reverse a couple of times not really a grinding sound but like the sound if you ever accidentally put a vehicle in park while you were moving down the road
