Figured I'd throw up a build thread for my project/cruiser 1989 Firebird. It's a base model Firebird with a 305 TBI, 5 speed and 3.08 gears. It's supposedly a Kansas car, and nearly devoid of any rust. My brother and I bought it on a whim in Michigan when we saw it on the side of the road.

Here it is when we got it back to Wisconsin

It's got a strange history, it was in an accident, evident by a messed up A pillar-fender gap and the fact that the front half of the front clip was plasma cut off, and the front of a different car was welded on. The original color was light blue, the original color of the donor front was black. It's got new fenders though. The goodwrench 305 crate motor has 30,000 miles on it and the trans is like new.

The P.O also did their own hack attempt to make a racecar, the TB had an adjustable fuel pressure regulator, the a/c was hacked out, It had a switch-wired Flex-a-Lite radiator fan and blue wire loom decorated the engine harness.

Drove it back from Michigan, got new ujoints, bearings in the rear axle, and rear brakes. Put on an older style set of taillights, took off the spoiler.

Last winter, my Brother re did the ugly, pot-smoke grey interior with a super simplified custom black interior with aluminum trim. Deleted the center console so that the shifter could stick directly out of the floor, and put a cue ball on the stick. New steering wheel, and a set of led gauges.

It started to run poor in the cold, so I did a tuneup, rebuilt the TB and did the ultimate TBI mods, put a chrome air filter on, and painted the top of the engine. I also pulled out the A/c heater box, A/c condenser, put on a non-ac heater box, and touched up the factory blue in there.

The before and after of that program.

That video is as it sat during the summer. It had a bad plug, and liked to only run on 7 cylinders, so I put in a new set of plugs. Then, I got to some modifications I'd been itching to do.

Got a set of factory louvers from a north dakota junkyard last summer.

So, for a vehicle that lives so much of it's life for fair weather and tinkering, the TBI was no where near adequate. I contemplated spicing up the motor, but the cost of vortec heads, machining, cam, head gaskets, and the other tchotchkeys turned me off, as I was already doing a carb swap. I already had a set of 305 vortec heads, but decided not to use them. So I started ordering parts. I used a professional products intake manifold, A speedway motors brand HEI, a Holley fuel pressure regulator, and a Street demon 625cfm carb. Of course, by the time I get it dialed the snow is falling, so into the garage the car goes.

Decided to go ahead and remove all functionality of the HVAC alltogether, made some removable plugs for the firewall holes and capped off the heater core.

Engine is good, just needs paint, so time to move back. Pulled the trans and fixed the broken speedo gear, also cleaned it up, threw on a pro5.0 shifter with a custom made shift lever, and painted it "flint metallic"

Oh man this takes me back. Haha 8 years ago my first car was an 89 firebird gta 350 auto with the rear window lovers as well and I love it but threw a rod 4 hours away an couldn't afford the tow bill to get her back. But I've been looking for one lately.

Looking good man

Man, I had a Firebird back in high school as my first car and I loved that thing. I regret selling it, I wanted to so much to that thing. If I knew then what I knew now, that thing would've been wicked. :/

Not the best picture, but here it is all painted.
I welded a bung onto the cover for a drain plug.

Got the rear control arms boxed and painted, put some gussets in the front control arms, and all the poly bushings pressed in.

Started digging into the core support. some bad rust down here, and a few holes rotted in the frame rail.

I've been set back a while by the rusted out steering box area, but that's about wrapped up now.

Nice! No heater while living in Wisconsin? How will you keep the windshield clear in the morning?
