Looking to install a remote start, keyless entry, and alarm system on my 1998 gmc k1500. I’ve look around online and may go with a Viper kit. I’m wondering what else I’ll need besides the kit itself with the remotes and whatnot if anything like a security bypass or something if that applies to trucks this old. I’m sure I’ll be able to find a wiring diagram online and be able to tackle this myself with all the other stuff I’ve done over the years

'98 was the first year for PassLock anti-theft from the factory, so you'll probably need to do something about that. Sorry I'm not more help, both of my trucks are '97s so I never had to mess with it.

I know you can have it tuned out of the PCM entirely, but I'm not sure about installing bypass modules for a remote start/alarm.

Either a bypass module, or you can do the resistor bypass of the Passlock system. I did the resistor bypass and used a CrimeStopper SP-502 system. I love it with the mornings getting colder!

You cant wire anything directly to the Viper ECM. You have to use relays for everything.

I used to install stereos and alarms like 20 years ago. Back then we were all about Clifford, Viper, crimestopper, etc. Today- I think your wasting money buying name brand. I bought a keyless entry unit for my Miata for ~$30 on ebay, two years ago, and Ive never even had to change the remote batteries to date. It even has on board relays- something some name brands do not. It works flawlessly, and is used almost daily. While its only a keyless entry, an actual alarm couldve been bought for about the same price, and only a few dollars more for remote start.
