Hi everyone.

I have a 98 k1500 with all led bulbs installed except for the 3rd brake lamp. I tried a putco all led lamp. It did not work until i redid the harness to make it work. The cargo lights did not work at all. So i went back to the OEM lamp with high quality bulbs and they did not work. Tried both ways on the bulbs.... no good. Put back the OEM bulbs and all works fine.

WHY, what gives.....

The OEM 3rd brake light assembly is VERY sensitive to the width of the bulb bases. If they're too wide, it will cause a nasty short. Too narrow, and they won't make good contact. I tried replacing the bulbs in mine with LEDs at one point and it would blow a 20A fuse every time I stepped on the brake pedal until I put regular bulbs back in. I tried a couple different kinds of LEDs with different bases, nothing worked.

I decided on a smoked Anzo LED aftermarket housing. They just work, no messing with the wiring like some of the cheaper options. I'm very happy with it. They have two versions, a clear housing and a smoked one. Here's some links to them on Amazon.

Clear (Anzo 531064):

How is this an "engine performance/maintenance" question?

"+Maintenance" .... we have kind of a hole in our subforums. I've wondered where to post a few things too that weren't exactly engine or even under the hood, but didn't seem to fit anywhere else any better than here.

No problem! The cargo lights on those Anzos I linked work just fine, no messing with the harness or anything.
