How does this really mild 305 build sound?

I would go with a 305 vortecs, they flow better than any other 305 head and then a mild cam maybe the smallest Lunati Voodoo cam or....look for a good running 305 vortec engine out of a truck they usually sell for cheap. 285 tq Lbs and 230 hp much better than tbi305.
I think the 305 Vortec heads I'm picking up and a nice cam should be the ticket. I'll look into the Lunati cam, maybe also check out the stock vortec cam. After that it's intake.

Would you consider a retrofit hydraulic roller with the linked lifters? There would be a few more bucks in the setup but two clear advantages are the insurance policy for longevity with the roller lifters and the obvious power gains.

I'm not extremely concerned about cost, but I want to buy as few new parts as possible; I'd prefer to reuse my springs, rockers, pushrods, but I'm curious as too what's involved in a setup like that, is there a part number you could toss me? How similar is it to a stock setup in a vortec engine?

You'd need a different spring, possibly a different pushrod, but could use the rockers. The retrofit hydraulic roller cams and lifters are 2x to 3x the cost of a flat tappet cam/lifters.

Flat tappet lifters aren't what they used to be. Neither are the cams. There is a process to "properly" break in or run in a flat tappet cam and lifters now, and if not followed, could result in your engine basically eating itself causing damage that would require you to yank it, tank it, and start again. This is not a threat. Just a possibility.

This is a retrofit roller cam/lifter kit. https://www.summitracing.com/parts/hrs-cl110225-12/overview/make/chevrolet

The lifters are linked. There are a few other bits you'd need, along with heavier springs.

Is it a roller cam Goodwrench TBI? He said it is in a F-car and the factory replacement engine is already roller cam equipped.

I had a 305 in my Tahoe and it pulled the truck around jist fine with 3.42 gears and 32" tall P305/50R20s. With a Lunati 268 cam and headers it ran stronger than the stock 350. It smoked the 4L60E so I pulled both and the truck currently has a cammed 8.1/4L80E sitting in it.

The Vortec 305 heads actually flow better than the Hecho en Mexico 062s GM is pushing out now. They flow in the mid 220cfm range compared to a peak of 218cfm for the 350 062 mexico garbage.

The Marine L30 was net rated at 260 hp with the tiny 395' marine cam.

Alright, I assumed the motor had a flat tapped cam, but I'm not sure. How do I check if it is roller or flat tappet?

Pull a valve cover, get a flash light and look down into the valley to see if it has the lifter dog bones and lifter spider tray.

This is what you are looking to see.

And if I've got a hydraulic roller setup already in there, then I could replace only the camshaft, re-use the lifters, I assume the pushrods would be fine as well. . .
