I was selling Chevys at a long-gone dealership in Westminster, California when these trucks were new. One Saturday morning an older couple came in looking for a tow vehicle for what they described as a fairly massive fifth-wheel luxury trailer. We test drove a nice crew cab dually, then went inside to work up some numbers. That's when the husband saw the first 454 SS that we'd gotten sitting on the showroom floor. It was love at first sight. I was standing behind his wife when he started telling her that it would be perfect for what they needed, and I was about to interrupt that according to the specs that I'd read, the tongue weight of his trailer would exceed them when he hurriedly waved at me to be quiet. So I went along with him, had a porter open the big glass sliding door, and off we went for a test drive, leaving his wife behind shaking her head, which she did even more when he lit up the tires upon our return. I sold them the truck with some misgivings knowing that it really wasn't what they needed, so I wasn't all that surprised when they came back the following Saturday to buy the crew cab dually that they'd originally been interested in. The husband pulled me aside after that deal was done and said: "Thanks for helping me get my toy last week, my wife was upset at first, until I let her drive it, now she loves it almost as much as I do!"
