Another 454 Vortec Build Thread - Documenting, Q&A, Help

Nice start to a build thread. Best of luck! Btw, maybe I missed it, but what year is it?

Decided to build a garage. Now the fun begins.

I seem to remember your mentioning this, and it sounds like a good idea. Oscillating fans would be the cheapest and simplest, but I’ll look into options for mounting on the ceiling that I could install when I’m doing the wiring for the area lights. Not weird at all. I much prefer cutoff type...

96 GMC K2500 Suburban Restoration (with a couple of mods)

Thanks. Oddly enough, when I searched in RA for my vehicle, this fan does not come up. However, it does come up when I search on the part number you provided. According to the buyer’s guide, it’s for 1997 on up. Mine’s a 1996

I’m curious to know which fan you’re using, and if you had to do it over, would you pick the same fan?

I went with a heavy duty ‘GM Genuine’ 1540109 from RockAuto, which hopefully will do the trick. I hadn’t thought about changing the fan; having a few more fan blades sounds like a reasonable idea.

I tried to check the data on the OBD2 device, and for some reason couldn’t connect it to the app on my phone. The fact that cellular service here in the park is marginal at best may affect the app’s behavior. I’ll leave it plugged in so it will continue to collect data as I drive. When I get...

Thanks! You just reminded me that I own such a device. I could have brought my full-size Xtool scanner, but I happen to also have a small OBD2 reader by the same company that might just measure temperature. I’m not sure. It was $20, as I recall. Turns out I even have it with me.

It wasn’t working particularly hard. Slight rolling hills on two lane rural road, between 55 and 60 mph. The temp varied by a few degrees on either side of the midway mark. 80s air temp. Some time back I mentioned this to Jim, whose shop I use, and he said to try replacing the fan clutch to...

96 GMC K2500 Suburban Restoration (with a couple of mods)

Made it to the campground yesterday afternoon. Noticed the temp was just over 210°, and thinking I’ll install that new fan clutch I have on hand before summer. 85° F on the way down here. We booked this trip to see the azaleas in the mansion gardens. They’re about a week past prime. Still...

Decided to build a garage. Now the fun begins.

That’s a thought. I had pretty much much decided to leave the framing exposed. The insulation is installed, although I suppose it could be added to.

Decided to build a garage. Now the fun begins.

Mine has open metal framing, so I have somewhat the same issue that you do. Even though it uses more wire, I can see how running wires along the second framing member above the floor, dropping down to the outlets along the lower wall, and running up to the overhead light outlets, would...

Decided to build a garage. Now the fun begins.

Sounds like a nice setup. Good to know that running EMT is actually easier than PVC. I was under a different impression. Ease of installation plus lower material cost plus a cleaner look is a hard combination to beat. Running the power up to the rafters then down to the boxes is something...

Decided to build a garage. Now the fun begins.

Thanks. The guy that suggested to me using PVC was in the electrical supply business; I don’t know whether or not he had ever been a practicing electrician. Maybe pricing was different when he was in the business than it is now. As for bending conduit, I watched a few youtube videos, and from...

Back to planning. # Step 6. The electrical wiring plan This will include such elements as the number and locations of outlets along the walls, plus those needed for overhead lighting and future garage door openers; the size and routing of MC cable and conduit; the subpanel; the electrical feed...

96 GMC K2500 Suburban Restoration (with a couple of mods)

Thursday morning, and our camping trip starts Monday. I have done nothing in the way of prep for this trip. The Subdivision hasn’t been started for over a week. Yesterday I also realized that the camper needs to be dewinterized. Plus it needs a good washing. Time to break out the checklists...
