Used vortec 454 fuel rail. $15 plus shipping obo

    Is the rail still available?

    Vortec 7.4 rough idle

Update: I used the dashcommand app with a cheapy tablet and set the cam retard. It took awhile to figure out all the technical stuff. (Dealer wanted $200 to set it.) I was close at 8.3 degrees. Got it set to 0.0 at 1150 rpms and finally buttoned everything up. The truck runs like a dream! So...

    Vortec 7.4 rough idle

Some good news... after changing the plugs, wires and FPR it’s idling good now. I took advantage of the plenum being off to restab the distributor without all the tweaks and turns you have to go through to get it in when the plenum is in the way on the 454. Crazy thing is that it took awhile to...

    Vortec 7.4 rough idle

I’m going to replace the fpr. I compared the gear with the old one they are exactly the same. Dipple side is between two teeth and the pin hole on the non dimple side is on a tooth.

Possibly, how’d you get it in spec then?

    Vortec 7.4 rough idle

And what about my FPR? Truck has always been hard starting. I replaced injectors, filter, FPR and pump recently trying to solve this issue. Fuel pressure drops immediately after key is turned off. When I clamped return line the pressure stayed without any drop off so it must be losing pressure...

    Vortec 7.4 rough idle

It idled okay before the distributor gear broke so I’m still thinking the distributor is still off. But I’ve reinstalled it probably 20 times and it only wants run in one position. One tooth either way and it doesn’t run or barely runs. I doubt I’m 180 degrees out as it wouldn’t run at all. Is...

    Vortec 7.4 rough idle

Plugs look like sh$t. Plus most were finger tight. If not the problem I’m having it would certainly become a future problem.

    Vortec 7.4 rough idle

Checked compression, all cylinders 150 lbs. But spark plugs badly fouled. Gas residue on threads and about 6 plugs were only finger tight. (The previous owner changed the plugs, bright individual.) anyways, looks like I’m gonna need new plugs and wires. I’m guessing the timing is still off...

    Vortec 7.4 rough idle

The regulator responded to the vacuum line being disconnected so I’m gonna say it’s good. When I clamped off return line pressure stayed when I shut the key off so it has to be leaking down the return line. Either way I doubt that’s my misfire problem. I tried stabbing the distributor again...

    Vortec 7.4 rough idle

From what I gather the spring inside the regulator is controlled by vacuum. At idle you have vacuum which opens the flow to return line. Under load there’s no vacuum, return is closed and pressure should be slightly higher. After cycling the key without starting, I get 62ish psi then it drops...

    Vortec 7.4 rough idle

I followed the service manual procedure. Said to shut off return line and recheck pressure. If above specified amount (55-65 psi) regulator is bad. I got over 90 psi. I’ve replaced the regulator awhile back so I’m skeptical it’s bad.

    Vortec 7.4 rough idle

I did a fuel pressure check at the rail. Clamped off return line and it read above 90 psi with key on. Bad regulator?

    Vortec 7.4 rough idle

Seems to be where it's idling then. I'll try to re-stab it one more time. It really has me scratching my head. I hope it didn't jump time or something chaotic like that. It only has 80k on it so hard to believe if that was the case.

    Vortec 7.4 rough idle

No luck on better idle. I’m thinking I must still be off a tooth. Given that the crank and cam sensor has been disrupted, that maybe why I’m not getting the p1345 code. Also, when I point a timing light at the damper it’s firing several degrees before the mark. I know timing lights are not...
