    Another idea is to set up a vid camera in the area of the clunk and see what happens. Doesn't need to be a go pro or something expensive. Amazon probably has thousands of cheap vid cams.

    Looks like allot of veins to me, but your mileage may vary. I gave decent advice, and the ADL jumper is a good start. I bought my 89 new, and have it to this day, but what do I know. Thanks for coming in and saving the day!

    My 89 hummed in the rear sense new. GM rears are usually indestructible with regular driving. Good idea to have a look, but I suspect it's nothing.

    an 88 is OBD1, scan tool is not going to be much help. You can jump A/B terminals in the OBD connector under the dash (), and the codes will flash though the service engine light. Fuel 9 to 10 psi is 1 psi too low. It should be rock solid at 11. Surging is usually a vac leak, or it's sucking...

    Nothing on the ground usually is a dead ringer for behind the master. Hydro clutch will do the same thing, and usually is eating up your floor pan paint under the rug on the fire wall. Been there. Done that.

    Mine was at the top lip, but it was just surface rust. I imagine the salt belt states could be bad. That was all fixed when my truck was repainted, but now I'm aware water can get trapped in there... and I blow it out after a wash.
