    '50 Chevy 3100

To be honest, I don't know. Our 1 ton didn't have a model number. There was a GMC logo on each side if the hood and that was it. Might have had something on the door jam but i never paid attention. The engine gave up in 1985 and that was the last I drove it. I think you would be able to tell...

    '50 Chevy 3100

We had a 1950 GMC 1 ton SRW on the farm. My grandfather bought it new and my dad taught me to drive it when I was 7 (1975). I believe the box was 9', 4 stake holes on each side. SM420 transmission (4 spd including bull low). Straight rail frame. We had a hoist on it as it was a grain truck...

    Towing ratings?

I think that the GM brochures from that time period were pretty generous in their payload ratings. My truck, a 1995 GMC ECSB K1500, has a payload rating in the sales brochure of about 1700 lbs. In the glovebox, the cargo weight rating (CWR) is only about 750 lbs. Several years ago, i weighed...

Best size tires to use with camper

Yes, I wasn't implying that tire pressure alone determines the load carrying capacity, but with the appropriate vehicle the ratings are affected by the tire pressure and type. Thanks for adding that info to clarify. One benefit of the 9.5" SF on the 1/2 ton is that it gives you a braking system...

Best size tires to use with camper

The OP has a 1988 K1500 with a 10 bolt rear end. Upgrading to a 10.5" FF axle seems like overkill to me. May as well buy a heavy 3/4ton . Upgrading to a 9.5" SF would be worthwhile and that would be much easier and more than good enough. (I've never done it as my K1500 came with the 9.5")...

    Encounters with your GMT-400

To this day, my brother and I are convinced that we saw a UFO one night on the farm while sitting in the car listening to distant AM radio stations. That was in the mid 80s though so not a GMT400 story.

Best size tires to use with camper

Increasing tire diameter will effectively give you a "taller" (or weaker) rear axle ratio. Assuming stock 245s and 3.73 gears, going to a 265 will be like having a 3.59 rear end. Going up to 285, it will be like having a 3.46 rear end. Personally, I would go 265 because it will give good...
