    The Stupid Engine Questions Thread

Service Engine Light and Hard Shifting.. Specs 1994 K1500 Automatic 5.7 Symptom Check Engine light on, hard shifting, engine stumbling at idle/stopped. Relevant Info The check engine light comes on only after cold starts. Before the light comes on the truck feels and drives perfectly fine...

Awesome thanks for the info. I would think that maybe it would be better that it goes to the aux cooler second to avoid heat soak. How much help do you think an extra trans cooler would give the transmission in lasting longer?

Haha yeah I wish it was a 5-speed too.. If that 4L60E doesn’t give up for at least 4 years then when I replace it I’m either going to try and swap a 4L80E in or a 5 speed. Funny thing is that I did have a 350 air cleaner on the truck but I had to remove the throttle body to rebuild it right...

I hadn’t given a ton of thought to the trans-cooler yet but I like the idea. When I swapped in the 350 I got a radiator off of a 1995 Z71 truck with a towing package so the radiator is 2-1/4 in thick (I believe) it also has an engine oil cooler that I added in but that’s all on the same...

    Oil pressure Question

The higher pressure on startup is perfectly normal because typically the truck will idle higher at cold temps, so the oil pump will spin faster. Any oil pressure that reads above that red line basically means everything is fine. Oil pumps rarely ever fail because it is a very reliable design and...

TBI 350 to TBI 454 swap?

I did a V6 to a 350 swap so I'd say you would have a similar experience to me. Just need to make sure you are able to find the PROM chip from a 454 truck and you will have to get bigger injectors on the TBI unit and I'm not sure but the big block might have different motor mounts.

I'm going for exactly that, I will not be modifying the ride height, mainly wanting to build this truck for longevity and reliability.

This was my grandfather's truck some years ago and he left it to me when he passed away. I have gotten a lot of use out of it and put maybe 15,000 miles on it in the last few years. It hasn't been cheap though, I performed a lot of repairs and costly preventative maintenance on the truck...
