I would make sure the boy you are with is not sabotaging your work with your truck. It's highly possible particularly if he has narcissistic behavior and traits. Just saying look for the simplest answer first.
You can bypass the whole stupid variable power assist crap with a piece of tubing that is made to replace the dumb thing. That's what I did and it worked great on my old lady's 97 suburban. Simpler, and IMO safer.
Try grabbing onto the pulleys 1 at a time. Pull them up, down, and side to side. If the bearing is bad you will likely see and feel it move. Also check for abnormally high levels of heat from accessories. That is how I check them and it does work.

There is 2 torx screws on top of the cap. There is a whodunnitorwhatnot sensor in there. It's small but will make your truck not start sputter or anything. Takes 5 minutes to change. Fairly common problem. I have changed it on 2 trucks and they fired right up both times. I hope this helps...

Grind off or drill out the head of the bolt. Should take you longer to get your tools gathered up than to get the bolt removed. I weld pipe for a living so that stuff is a little easier for me. I'm not trying to be an arrogant ****** bag or anything. Have a nice day sir.
