    5 speed questions

There are many variants of the transmission but if your truck has the original transmission then as long as you order for a 1988 model there should be no problems with you getting the right part.

    5 speed questions

Based on the fact that all 4.3 5.0 and 5.7 engines are based on the same engine family (SBC Gen I) I believe that in reality you "can" install the smaller clutch into a 5.7 or install the larger clutch in the 4.3 or 5.0 but the way I see it installing the smaller clutch in the 5.7 is asking for...

    5 speed questions

Well hopefully who ever installed the 5.7 installed the bigger clutch lol. Most would assume the v6 has the smaller clutch and the 2 V8s are the same but after doing the research and actually doing the same thing myself I can def say the 4.3 and 5.0 motors have the 11 inch diameter and the 5.7...

    5 speed questions

Assuming you have a 5.7L. The 4.3L and 5.0L use an 11 inch, the 5.7L uses the 12 inch. To remove the shifter, turn the handle counter clockwise and unscrew it. Then pull back the rubber boot enough to access the screws beneath it. Remove the screws to get the boot off. Then there are 4...

    NV3500 To 700r4

Your truck "should" already have the bracket for the TV cable on the throttle body. (My 91 with a manual trans does) so you just need the TV cable from an earlier GMT 400. (88-91 is just a guess) I believe GMT 400s started coming with the 4L60E a few years before many GM passenger cars did so...

    NV4500 in a 1 ton 1990 Chevrolet GMT 400 4x4 350 srw?

My experience is most of these transmissions, NV3500, NV4500, 700R4, 4L60E, 4L80E etc are all good transmissions when serviced as recommended by GM on STOCK or near stock vehicles. My 5LM60 is going on 270,000 and is almost 30 years old. Cant be that bad of a transmission. And with the autos...

Any guys towing with a 1500 5 speed anymore?

Thanks for the offer. I think I will play it safe and get one from a 2WD truck or suburban. I'll look for a 3.73 but if I cant reasonably find one, Ill just get a 3.42 which will still be a good improvement over my 3.08 and 31 inch tires.

    What have you towed lately

5900 lbs with a 5 speed and 3.08 gears and larger than factory tires.... in the Texas Hill Country. Proud of the truck which surprised me with how well it handled the load but better gears are now in the works.

Any guys towing with a 1500 5 speed anymore?

Well I picked up the travel trailer yesterday. Ran the truck across the scales a few times both with and without the trailer. Truck was 4580, trailer was about 5900. With the WD hitch, I lost 100 pounds off the front axle and gained about 680 on the rear axle. Truck handled the trailer fine...

Any guys towing with a 1500 5 speed anymore?

One problem with the reputation is there were many different versions that look the same but have radical internal differences. The 88-90 ones have the worst lubrication problems that commonly failed even while under warranty. The 1991 multi-shift rail was supposed to be a huge improvement but...

Any guys towing with a 1500 5 speed anymore?

I didn't expect that wagon to be boxy!!!! That's awesome. My first car was an 88 Caprice and my second was an 89. I love those things! Ill have to check out the amsoil fluid. Mine seems to behave the opposite. Shifts great first 5-10 miles of operation and graduately the pedal gets...

Any guys towing with a 1500 5 speed anymore?

Are you talking about your 1998? I always wondered about this. 1991 Sales brochure lists no difference in max trailer weight with either transmission but still have a disclaimer recommending the auto for any towing applications. However, I have also noticed that most things I have read on the...

Any guys towing with a 1500 5 speed anymore?

Glad to know you have been towing with your 5.0L NV3500 set up for a while. I agree about the driver being the wildcard here. GM rates these trucks with the same towing capacity regardless of manual or automatic, however they do specifically spell out that they recommend the automatic for...
