more breaking, Cant drive this thing 20 miles without taking a **** on me.

I had a start condition where it would run for about 10-20 mins then die, and cool down and fire up for another few minutes and die. so I could see I was getting fuell, as the TBI was spraying as my kid was cranking it over, so I pulled the distributor, and for a distributor I basically rebuilt, aside from the shaft and cam gear a few years ago, It looked like ****.

The Dizzy Shaft was spent, and since that shaft and a gear seems to cost only $10 less than Cardone at O'reilys (minus cap and rotor) I went ahead and ordered one.

When I got it I was kinda disappointing, because it looked super cheap, even the ICM looked like a 4 year old glued it together. but I installed it and it fired up, but it usually fired up when it was cold, So I re-timed it, and it seem to be running well again, so I take it around my neighbor hood which is pretty big.... all is good, pull up to the house, hold the revs up.... and it stutters and dies, this time it does not start up again. come out the next day, nothing. sooo now that the distributor is new, gotta be the Coil, which is also only 2 years old. replace the coil..... nothing, so then I decided to do some trouble shooting since I was stumped, and I should of done this the first time!!!

anyways after a while I found a great website to trouble shoot no start conditions. http://easyautodiagnostics.com/gm/4.3L-5.0L-5.7L/distributor-mounted-icm-tests-1

Anyways I skipped there step of getting a little led light to check for ignition control to the coil, and so it was difficult to tell if the light was pulsating with my test light, it did seem that it intermittently was, so I yank the brand new coil off and went to autozone and they benched tested it..... and it failed, so then I had to drive to another autozone to get another coil to replace that one. :pp: I get the new coil, throw it on, No Dice! still wont start, I bench test the Coil I originally took off and it passed. So now I think its the brand new distributor I just got.:nono: I go ahead and get one of those little leds like the Link suggested and checked for a pulsating light on the control wire again, The Led definitely makes it easier to test in my case, and as I crank it over the light would start on, and then shut off, and after a few more cranks, the light wouldn't come on at all. so now its safe to blame my new distributor. as I was curious what was the culprit, I tested the voltage of the pickup coil and the link supplies what range of voltage it need to hit to make it a good pickup coil...... It never came close. so pulled the distributor out and returned it to O'reilys for a refund..

Jumped on Rock auto and found a distributor that claims to be 100% cpu tested and comes with a brass cap and rotor for the same price.

Btw, if you break down in a Dually, Good luck! AAA operators head explodes when you tell em you need a wide flatbed which usually has a dual cab, crew cab, whatever the hell you wanna call it. the last tow it took 3 hours total the, first guy came and said not a chance, so waited an additional 2 hours for the right truck. He suggested to me, next time just tell em to bring a truck out that can handle a motor home/RV, there wide and can handle the weight.

So this time I tell em I need a flat bed that can handle an RV. 30 mins later single cab truck didnt even glance at it for 2 seconds, already knew he couldnt do it.... he walks up to me, "I was hoping it wasnt a dually" 2 hours later truck that picks up the front show up, West Virginia native, cool guy. un-hooked drive shaft and towed her home.... hopefully the last tow until February, when my AAA gets renewed or I sale it, whichever happens first.

took the lady down to get her car about 25 miles away, trucks running great, with all the breakdowns, she ask me "Is this thing gonna make it" Coming from a person who once enjoyed driving this truck, was now clearly over it.... so hit the off ramp and I hear some loud noises from under the hood, Im just sitting there like " are you ****** kidding me!" get to her car, pop the hood..... Its obvious O'reilys 2nd pile of **** alternator was going out in under a year and maybe 3500 miles was put on each of em..... the noise is really loud, but the alternator was still charging the battery, and ive never had an alternator put me on the shoulder. Hind sight, I could of pulled the alternator and got another one right then and there, but I didnt wanna put another O'reilys part on my truck so I rolled the dice and tried to cruise her home.

Well that was a bad Idea.... so I get about another 10 miles, volt gauge dips alternator pulley seizes, serpentine belt ripped the the alternator pulley off, and wrapped itself around the water pump and crank..... losing power steering and brakes at 60mph while listening to the serpentine belt skid against the crank pulley, It'll wake you up!

Dang that sucks! I've never heard of a alternator failing like that, clearly a poor rebuild.
You gonna get a new one from rock auto?
Oh yeah? what was your bad experience?
I had to replace a front cv axle after my rebuild on my dually. I had one ordered from O'Reilly for next day pickup. I get to the store and notice a bigass axle on their counter with the end cap off and grease spilling out. I asked for my axle, dude go back to look for it, come bask and say they can't find it.
I pointed to the one on the counter and said "that looks like it". The dude replied "no, another customer just returned that".
He keeps looking for it, can't find it in the store, and comes to the conclusion that was, in fact, the axle I ordered.
Apparently they had sold my axle to another customer, they returned it with the cap broken off. The dude asked me if I still wanted it, I laughed and walked out of the store. :33:o_O

Got one from AutoZone with a warranty, no issues. There is a small AutoZone near me, and a big one that has damn near everything a couple towns over. No need to ever go back to O'Reillys.

that sucks!!! I dont know whats up with those guys. I definitely wont be considering them for parts for a long time.

funny, I got a little AutoZone walking distance and a big AutoZone the next town over as well.

Ordered a New Alternator from Rockauto for $55.00 and claims 2 year roadside assistance if the part leaves you stranded.... not bad compared to $125 dollars.

My serpentine belt got thrashed as well during the good times so they had Continental Elite belt on clearance (looks like a re-branded Gator back belt) for 9 bucks, So I ordered one of those as well.

Im looking at those 2 beasts in your signature and noticing your in California, you must pay over $500 in registration a yr plus smog every other year.... I just paid $251 in registration fees for 1 truck.... gotta love that weight fee.:shitsweak::imo:

Yea, I think I caught Browns Scam tax, because the title transfer with registration was only $280... plus ****** mpg and I dont use it for work anymore, not worth keeping this truck anymore.

I got a full refund on the alternator and the bunk distributor they sold me.... my hands are clean with them now.
