How would one go about changing the fluid in a NP241 (This is the floor shifted one correct) and what do I need to fill it back up with? Mine is really slow to engage and I don't think it has ever been changed since it was new. I am planning to do a full tune up sometime and am trying to get figure eveything out before hand.

A) the really slow to engage is not the transfer case. It's the thermal actuator in the front diff.

B) there are 2 plugs on the back side (towards rear of truck) pull bottom one to drain fluid, replace plug, pull top plug and fill with ATF till it is level with the hole

Just fill it till it starts coming out of the fill plug hole. EDIT: My book does not give the amount but you fill it till it is level with the bottom of the hole

Is there a cooler or way to have the transmissioncooling system tie into the transfer case. I don't know if they realy need to have a cooler running to them ( the one I have is a NP 241c in a 93 Burb ) but it just seams like they would work better/longer if there was cooling happining. That or I have just drank too many beers. =)

no cooler for them as the pump in them is too weak to pump that much fluid much less any need for it, there is nothing in there that heat really effects like it does to a trans, they only fail from leaking too much fluid or just plain abusing them way out of the parameters of what they were designed to handle.

Ok, and thank you. I just had to replace the trany and while draining the trasfer case, the fluid was very old looking and burnt smelling. That could just be because the PO never changed it out though.I had heard that the 241's were prety good, more cracked cases than worn out units around here. Now I feel better about putting everything back togeather tomarrow.

sorry if this was already asked, but im curious how long it SHOULD take for the transfer case to engage to 4wd. 97 gmc 1500 push button 4x4 and it takes about 30 seconds in neutral until I get impatient and go to reverse back to neutral and wait, and then to drive and repeated. It on average takes 2 or 3 times back and forth to get it to engage. Yes I turn the wheels from one side to the other, don't know if it helps but I was told to do it. I also stop in neutral between each gear change for around 10 seconds. Any input would be helpful. I know semiguys 4x4 is the same as mine and his is almost instant.

Thanks,
-Josh

With the thermal actuator (88-97) the times can vary. Mine was 20 seconds before i upgraded to the electric servo type (98+) and now mine is under 2 seconds.
