I don't think I shared this earlier, here's the calculation for the 383. Obviously I have room on gasket thickness to adjust it higher.

Here's what the #5 piston looks like after tapping on the head.

I'm glad I separated all of the fasteners and put them in bowls marked with where they go. After a Month or 2, I'll never be able to remember where everything goes - it's that Sometimers Disease. It's a good thing it's a truck and not a Camaro

The cam that comes with the short block is a Comp Cam, or other brand with the same specs as this one
08-432-8, 230/236° @0.050", .510/.520" lift w/1.5 Rockers.

The one I already have is,
08-430-8, 224/224° @ 0.050", .525/.525" lift w/1.5 Rockers.

I think I'll run the one in the short block and see what happens with the longer duration. What do you think?

I think either cam would work nicely. I would probably keep the smaller of the two myself, but that is me. The XR282 will push your powerband up a few hundered rpm, but I think you will still have more torque everywhere compared to the 350.

Yeah, remember I'm running a 2500 stall converter.
Hot Rod Magazine tested the XR282 in a HT383 back in 2002ish. Here is what it made power wise with the Vortec heads on the ~9:1 HT383. Knowing they made 426 ft/lbs @ 2.500 I think your ~2,500 converter will probably be just fine. It will likely stall even higher behind the 383.

Peak HP: 455.3 @ 5,600
Peak Torque: 493.0 @ 4,200
Average HP 2,500-4,800: 327.4

Average Torque 2,500-4,800: 467.7
Average HP 4,000-5,700: 427.4
Average Torque 4,000-5,700: 465.3
Torque at 2,500: 426.3
