I’m just about to fly out to Arizona to pick up a Suburban, a ‘96 GMC K2500 SLE with a 454, and 99,500+ miles. The clear coat is gone, so it’s going to need a repaint, but the body is straight with one very minor exception, and only minor surface rust. Just bought a 27 ½ foot travel trailer, and my ’93 Chevy K1500 Suburban needs a bunch of work, so I thought I’d go for a 2500 for towing duties. With the prices these things are going for, I may fix my ‘93 and sell it, as it has only 110,000 miles.

Hoping to make it to Virginia in four days, but it may take five as I’ll keep the speed down to help the gas mileage. Road trip!

Anyway, I was pleased to find this forum!

Congratulations on the new Burb and welcome to the forum! These are very capable trucks, the 2500 Burb is made for towing. Probably will barely know the trailer is back there ...

Thanks everyone. I‘m hoping that the K2500 rides close to as well as my Chevy K1500, which was/is a road trip machine!

In any case, I’ll have about 2300 miles to get to know this beast. Really curious to see what kind of gas mileage I’ll get. My 1500 got around 20, and up to 22 mpg on the highway.

 Brand new my K1500 5.7 was estimated at 13-17 mpg.
When I first got mine i was getting about around 13 -14. A tuneup, new plug wires, Volant cold air intake, catback exhaust, and an MSD ignition control module boosted the hwy mileage significantly. I ran stock tires set to factory recommended pressures.

Around town was still not great, but better than it had been. Most of the time I was using it for road trips, to Moab and back from the central Rockies, and occasionally out to San Diego. Admittedly 22 mpg was the upper end, but I consistently got 19 - 20 on the road.

I noticed when driving my Suburban at higher elevations (I-70 west of Denver in particular) the mileage was a LOT better. I guessed it was because of reduced wind drag... figuring drag is proportional to density, and the air at 5000-7000 is less dense than that at sea level.

At low elevations it used to get 17-17.5 mpg in factory trim (3.42 gears, oe wheels and tires). Now, with different tires (taller, wider, more aggressive tread) and a few other changes (3.73 gears), I'm in the 15 mpg territory.

It's a 1998 L31 4L60E.
