A few quick questions about the oil galley plugs on a 98 5.7

How many are there total?

I read it's a good idea to thread thread the front 3. Are the rest already threaded?

No. I forget the exact number maybe somebody else will chime in. There's also one about 1.5 inches below the rear main cap that needs to be in there or you'll have zero oil pressure. Look in a service manual for the exact depth it needs to be installed.

Thanks Hipster. I dont have a seevice manual. This is my first build so just want to make sure I don't miss any. But after searching the internet I can't seem to find an answer to how many total there are.

The service manuals are on this sight somewhere though I don't have the link for the downloads.

Mainly 88 - 95 manuals but, there is some for 98 but IIRC one or more are corrupt.

There are various sizes of oil gallery plugs. Blocks are not all machined the same. Some blocks use larger plugs than other blocks, in some locations. Be careful which "plug kit" you buy--you may or may not get the correct sizes of plugs.

The oil gallery plugs by the camshaft/timing chain area may be VENTED on some engines. This is a great idea for purging air from the oil gallery. Some folks think the vents are for "oiling the timing chain", but that's not correct. You can buy vented plugs, or use a tiny drill bit to vent the plugs in the "kit".

A few months ago, these were about fifty cents per plug. Now they're two dollars.

Some folks are big on threading the end of the passages by the timing chain, and using a threaded pipe plug instead of the press-in soft plugs. I put the standard soft-plugs in using threadlocker as a sealant--Loctite 271 "Red" for example.

I've always herd to make sure that you don't tap the front plugs too deep or you can block off oil flow.

Actually you will have oil pressure but none of the oil gets filtered so almost as bad!
