Since this thread got bumped I might as well contribute to the discussion. A couple years ago I switched both of my '97s to LED license plate lights, this style specifically, in white.

They're still doing great. They fit just fine in the original sockets/housings and should be relatively waterproof even if the housings leak a little.

I have been guilty of resurecting a few threads myself. Usually it is one that I have searched the entire internet and some of the remote corners of hell to find the info therein. If I had to go to that much trouble, then someone else must be looking too. Cadillac Bob was likely performing a public service!

I put RED license plate bulbs so whole back end is red lit! It’s a nice look plus little lower light for cops to have a bit harder time reading plate numbers! Lol

I bet that it's not legal anywhere in North America. Same with your led headlight bulbs there Bob. there are absolutely not road legal anywhere in North America. dosent matter what people say on the internet. if headlight bulbs dont have a legitimate Dot/csa approval than they are not road legal. and the reason is because they are to powerful, such as how they are blocking out your fog light beam....

I was arguing with someone over these bulbs but they were claiming they were road legal and I dont feel like doing that today. But I have the laws and can post them if you want to read them. Mine are Canadian but USA is basically the same. what is legal in the states is Legal in Canada.....

I just want you to know man... if your lights suck.... do the 4 High and Low beam mods...

Been looking to do this ever since I put some bright white LED backup bulbs. Thanks for the link!

so i access it from behind th bumper? or does the housing pop off?
You can replace the whole assembly with an led setup that will light up your whole tailgate. They snap right in and look like oem housing. They are ridiculously bright. I put some on one of my trucks. I’ve had them in mine for 3 plus years now with no issues.

Knowing the laws for everything that affects you is very helpful in life. people of authority abuse their power over the people who dont know their rights.

I actually removed one of my bulbs and all of the wiring for the license plate bulb. after reading the entire laws regarding headlights, lights ect I learned that only 1 license plate bulb is required. If you have a burnt out bulb than it needs to be fixed asap.... but if it dosent exsist than it's not a problem. I put a 7 way trailer plug on the right side where the license plate bulb would have been. it looks mint. there a projector led in the left plate light that illuminates the plate perfectly. good to go.

I have been stopped by a cop once shortly after I did this 8 or more years ago for a routine traffic stop.... I was doing the speed limit.... shocking, its the fùcking speed limit but that was his reason for pulling me over. anyways he said that he liked what I did with the 2nd license plate bulb, I said its not there take a look under the bumper if you want. I have a perfect driving record and he let me go very shortly but when I asked him why he would pull me over for driving the speed limit he said it was suspicious because no one does the speed limit on that stretch of road. so wait, if I did nothing wrong then why are you harassing me? he let me go.

knowing the laws can be helpful.

on another note these bulbs...

with the printed circuit boards and 12V positive and negative on both sides of the board...... the only place I have found that these dont work is in the cargo lights and maybe the 3rd brake lights, (I cant remember the 3rd brake light) put a multimeter on the contacts of the socket and you will see that it is built for an incandescent bulb where polarity dosent matter. the contacts are positive on both contacts on one side and negative on both contacts of the other side.

so they will short out an led when activated. I blew 2 expensive projector lense bulbs doing this. my solution was to remove the contacts from the printed led circuit board. I just used a utility knife and shaved it off, even up inside the silicone a little bit. I then sealed it back up with a little bit of silicone and its got to go.

I just installed these in the LP light and all interior locations. World of difference in the light output and color hue. Fairly cheap, and I've had nothing but good luck with bulbs I've purchased previously.

LED 194 Blulb

I do like the idea of doing away with one of the LP lights and running the trailer plug there. That way it isn't dangling below the bumper. How hard was it to open up the hole in the bumper?

Just FYI for anyone looking, I tried these in my corner markers and they didn't work at all. No idea why, they were fine in the license plate lights.
