I have a couple transmission issues, either 4th gear is slipping, or the torque converter won't lock up, not entirely sure which, when going down a flat road at 60+ it does just fine unless climbing a hill, then it revs like it's in neutral, I shift to third manually and third works like normal. And reverse does not like to engage when warmed up, only when first starting and immediately shifting to reverse, sometimes will engage when warm by shifting to park first, but that is his or miss

Did you check the fluid level? At one time, my old Blazer started acting up (would shutter/slip in OD). Turns out it was low on fluid (never figured out why, never leaked that I saw).

Agreed on the verifying fluid level. Can you smell the fluid to see if it smells burnt?

But it does sound like it's slipping. If fluid level is okay, I would be dropping the pan to see if you find any excessive friction material. Fluid will have a very strong burnt smell if this is the case.

There's nothing in a torque converter that will make the engine "rev like it's in neutral".

You have a slipping friction item. Probably one that's also active in reverse.

I had a similar issue but reverse wouldn’t engage for 3-4 seconds. Culprit was the TC. No issues since.

I check fluid level daily, always good. Is the valve body a possible culprit? I just had the transmission rebuilt

Oh, hold on...how long ago was the unit rebuilt? Did the shop give you a warranty? I'd be taking it back for them to look into it.

I would think the proper diagnosis would be to hook up a line pressure guage and see if the pressure is correct when 4th is enabled, then that would point to a slipping clutchset. If the pressure is too low, then it could be something else. Do you have any check engine codes?

No codes, I rebuilt it myself so no warranty, it had the issue with 4th before the rebuild

Oh darn! Did it work fine in the beginning? Like after the rebuild? Did you go though all of the seals and bushings, besides the clutch/steel plates?

Is this your first rebuild? What did use as reference to rebuild it? Look into one of these service manuals and see what it says about not going into 4th gear. ATSG is one of them. I don't know enough of these units to tell you if both symptoms you have are related...

Here you go: http://shop.ukrtrans.biz/wp-content/uploads/catalogs/4L60E.pdf

On page 3 it lists what's on, off, applied, holding, etc:

You must be registered for see images attach

Check your solenoid A. You should be able to figure out which pins on the main connector to test for resistance. It looks like the 2-4 band, forward clutch and the 3-4 clutch are applied in 4th. So most likely one of those is not working.

If you look at the Reverse range, it's different components that engages R, so you may have more than one issue.

Good luck.
