Can’t find a 454SS, so I’m building my own!

Mine is a 90 model. I’m wondering how you are going to get that much power on the pavement. I have a Gen V with a Harris stage 1 chip, Edelbrock intake and JBA shorty headers into a single 3.5 inch exhaust. I’m still running the TBI and it will spin tires through all 3 gears.

Very nice! I’m planning on running Caltrac’s and also hoping to run a 300 series rear tire. Turbo power also isn’t nearly as violent as dumping a clutch or a nitrous shot, it’s very linear which makes the power more controllable.

There are ways to soften a nitrous hit...

If you're keeping the 4L80, just stay with the 24X stuff and do a 411 swap or aftermarket GenIII controller. To me, the appeal of GenIV is the 6L80/90 and the variable cam timing.

Not until the 4L80 came out in 92. Prior it was a TH400.
1991 is first year for the 4L80E. 1990 454SS trucks had the TH400 (3L80 in "modern" nomenclature)

I'm wondering about the 454SS rear axle OP got. If it came from a 1990 model it's got 3.73 gears to match the non-OD TH400; if it's from 1992-1993 it has 4.10's to match the 4L80E

Cool project!

Probably not unless it's a 2500 or 3500. The 1500s customarily got the 4L60/60E, depends on the year.
Exactly. Wouldn't get a 4L80E unless it was a 2500 (8 lug, not 6) or a 3500.. the only exception would be a 1991-1993 454SS.

That's what I thought! Pinger's Burb is very similar to mine except for the extra 3 lug nuts and the better transmission ( his is a pewter 99 C2500 and mine is a C1500, but both are 5.7s).
The trans difference and the better brakes/rear axle are the main reasons if I get a 400 pickup, I'd rather it be a 2500/3500. Half ton is okay for a Burb, but the pickup has too many weak points.

The 'Burb really needs the 14 bolt, 4L80E, and honestly the 454 too.. :D JMHO
