When I purchased this truck, the exhaust was rigged by owner, I mean sheet metal screws and wire and no converters. But had a new set of knockoff magnaflo or something. Had it all re-done, true duals and it looks awesome, but sounds terrible, guessing the cheap mufflers. Didn't want to sink in a ton on exhaust at the time. But here's the question. What is a good muffler, not overly loud, but good low sound for a true duel, no cat exhaust. I've been reading and researching, but also looking for opinions.

Knock off flowies and maggies from summit sound great. Make sure the ones you have aren't installed backwards. Given the level of quality of the install it's entirely possible...

I'm running 2,,,24 inch old school glass packs. No cats, shorty headers. 2 1/4 in lites and 2-1/2 out I think, what ever was OE on my 97 c-1500 5.7 L. I just built another exhaust pipe from a tail pipe I got at pull a part. A lot of people ask about my exhaust. That say it sounds good. Not real loud, but at WOT it gets a lot louder. Still not real loud. Also old school steel glass packs are dirt cheap, and are as free flowing as it gets with a muffler. They are the true original performance muffler. Also my exhaust comes out of the back around the receiver hitch.

Normally I don't like the look of duals out the back, but that looks good. Around here it's usually what I call a southern Illinois special, dual slash cut 3" tips, one side always higher than the other...

I've got 2 singe-in/single-out Flowmaster original 40's on my 98 and soon on my 96 too. Love the sound of the 40s. The 96 currently has glasspacks on it and I can't wait to get rid of them. I would also recommend a Magnaflow 18" muffler if you are looking for something quiet that has a decent rumble to it.

I put dual 2.5" exhaust with a crossover, cats, and Cherry Bomb Salute mufflers dumping in front of the rear axle. It has a great tone, but it's too loud in the cab. I have the tubing to finish it out, but haven't welded it up yet.

Not a fan of true duals. Not the best setup for power. Best power is achieved with a proper single exhaust. The next level down is an "X" pipe. After that is duals with an "H" pipe. And True Duals are behind that. A factory single is usually a bundle of compromises and is generally pretty bad.

What size tubing and how much horsepower are you planning to make?

My "00 Denali had the enormous OE muffler and the, unique to the Denali & Escalade, oval tip. I bought a pair of single chamber "Total Flow" stainless units, and a stainless y-pipe from Amazon. They sound great, arent obnoxious, give out a great roar through the OE tailpipe at 4000 RPMs just before it shifts. But barely louder than stock at idle. Not hard to have gone true dual, but really liked the unique tip and the notch in the OE body cladding.
It wouldn't be hard to put them on yours, and reconnect to the existing tails...
