It’s an electrical mess. I got it with no working blinkers or rear lights. Most of the interior lights and gauges don’t work either. It’s coming around though.

Another vote for a super longbed.
Very first vehicle I ever owned was a 61 Dodge truck. 318 and typewriter transmission, I gave $500 for it in 1985 Another one I wish I still had!

That's what you call "pretty basic" compared to modern vehicles. Surprising it has power steering.

Yeah, back in the '90s those grilles were $300 and up for a pristine one.

I think I would look into adding a fan clutch.... that might free up some power after getting rid of the box.

I think if I even bought a box truck, the box would get turned into a nice shed for my lawn mowers and snow blower.

It was still an option at this point. I had to drive it without it and let me tell you, it was a bear.

I’ll have to take a look at that. I have no idea where I’d start with that.

I wouldn't be too concerned with the performance yet.
Imagine this:.
The box is removed and you're cruising at 65 miles per hour.
Two fat chicks, weighing 500 pounds each, parachute onto your frame, simulating the weight of the box.
Then they secure and deploy an eight by twelve foot parachute.
This is where you're at now.
Lose the weight and wind resistance and you may be presently surprised.
Of course your rear end ratio will also come into play.

And in the useless trivia category: mopar 318s and gm 305s are the favorite engines of demolition derby professionals for their durability under extreme (wot, no radiator) situations.
