This truck was my daily in high school, college, and the beginning of my career before it became a toy a couple years ago. The toolbox was used to haul tire changing/emergency tools and various hand tools during that time. It stays pretty empty now other than a jack, four way, and jumper cables that I carry on long trips.
Just tell anyone who asks that its your traction aid for keeping more weight over the rear tires

Weight on a relatively stock vehicle helps a lot also. Take out that tool box! Next take out the passenger seat, remove the carpet padding, remove the AC system if it doesnt work, remove the tailgate, etc. get creative with weight and I'll be you could knock off close to a half second.

Thread watched. I also have a 97 vortec. I know, mine was running a 15 second 1/4 mile time before I had the trans rebuilt ( heavy duty kit with corvette servos, pressure turned up for firmer shifts, and a shift kit) and did a true trac with 373s from 342. I drive mine every day, so 373s are a better choice for me. Im sure Im in the 14s now, but havent checked it yet. Like you, the engine it self is OE, but its been flash tuned, and I have shorty headers with free flowing exhaust. Also have done all the little things to in hance engine performance, like high flow air filter, shaved throttle body plate defueser, electric fans, cold thermostat, ( like you said, these engines run better cold, mine is at 175°) I have 275/60/15 tires, and I welded 2 steel bars (200#) around the receiver hitch for traction, and Im sure there are several other things I am forgetting to mention. I do have a race timmer app, but my previous time was not done from an app.

Gears? Just put a shorter set of tires on back at the track. You can keep your highway gears, and your weight transfers to the rear wheels faster.

When I autocross my Mustang I swap on a set of shaved Falkens that are a full 1" shorter than my street tires. It brings my rpm right up into my power band while lowering the car lower than any Vette that shows up. Plus, the smaller tire size means that I can fit all four wheels and tires in the car along with a jack and a passenger.
