How to find radio lock code 1997 Silverado?

Hi folks,

I have a new Kenwood stereo to put in complete with the proper harness. This way I can simply pop the original radio back in if I ever want or need to (it works fine, just wanted to upgrade). Installing the new Kenwood should take less than an hour - almost plug and play with the install kit.

BUT, I don't want to lose the ability to reuse the stock radio in the future because I don't have the security unlock code for it. Is there any way to find out what that code is before I unplug and remove the thing?

There used to be a GM service number you could call, punch in some numbers displayed by the head after certain button presses, and the service system would spit out the code to you. Dunno if that's still in service tho, or where I saw that info lol.

Are you certain it has a code on it tho? They don't come set from the factory, so chances are unless you set one, there isn't one. To be sure, if the red light on it doesn't blink when the radio is off, there is no code.

Nobody stole these ****** radios to begin with, they just stole the whole truck. No idea why GM thought these things needed security codes...should have spent that budget line making them harder to steal.

Radio is in and working great. Smallest one I've ever seen - not much bigger than a pound of butter. Bloody thing is smarter than me. I'm on a pretty steep learning curve with it!
