Full Length Suburban and the XL's
vs Shorter Length 4 door Yukon/Tahoe

- How much extra cargo room is there in the back between the two?
I am 6'6" tall and want an overlander to sleep in the back when wheeling off road.

- Do you notice a difference in vehicle size when wheeling off road?

From Wiki I get,
#---------Full Length ---------------Tahoe/Yukon
WB-----131.5-----------------------117.5
L--------219-------------------------199
W--------77-------------------------77
H--------72-------------------------72

Never had a Tahoe, but have had many Burbs. That extra 20" makes them a bit more fun to park( pull through spaces are great when they're available!). But the cargo area in a 400 series Burb (like the square body Burbs I used to have) is 8 feet long with the second row seats folded down and the third row seat out. And that area is 4 feet wide. With the second row up, it's between 5 and 6 feet long ( would have to measure mine to be exactly sure). Even with the third row seat in, there's still a decent amount of room, enough to get the fullsize spare tire out.

This is leaving the Conroe, Texas swap meet last October. I had the truck full from front to back; lots of swap meet sale stock( hot wheels, other toys, car parts and old magazines) plus my tables and camping gear.
Many times, our family camped out in the back of a Burb at a swap meet. My dad was 6', my brother is 6'5", and we all had room. The biggest issue we had is all that glass and steel get cold when it's cold outside. We used air mattresses, but it was hard to keep them properly inflated. Last time Mom and I worked this swap meet ( in 2016) we slept in the Burb. Cold and hard bed( I should have put moving blankets under our sleeping bags). But it was lots cheaper than the motels.

We've had both 4 dr 99 tahoe and 98 suburban. Yes theres a big difference. You'll notice it at the parking lot or packing luggage. Plus gas tank. Burb has 42/44 tahoe has 28/32 I think somewhere in that range. Besides the obvious burb having a 3rd row and still providing cargo behind it. Tahoe has a good size cargo area. I think bigger then the suburban. Only with the 3rd row in place. Once you remove the 3rd row then theres no comparison. Burb spare tire inside. Tahoe is under rear bumper. Tahoe offers 4x2 or 4x4 and that's it. Suburban offers 4x2 or 4x4 and c/k2500. Suburban back windows go all the way down while tahoe goes only a 1/4 down. (Referring to middle doors btw) really. Your decision. We liked our tahoe, it was great. I have more fun memories with the suburban so I'm team suburban lol. But both are great comfortable rigs. When it comes to u turns or loading them up then theres no comparison in size:) theres a reason why the police drive Tahoe's lol

Yup, Burb needs some room to do a u turn, 3 lanes minimum. And they're no fun in a parking garage. Other than that.....Burbs are better if you need space.
And the inside mounted spare is much better than the downstairs mounted one. That mechanism gets ALL the grunge under the truck in it.
And the range is better too. Used to make trips to Austin, Texas ( 340 miles round trip) and Lafayette, Louisiana (420 miles round trip). 99 400 series Burb, 44 gallon tank, 5.7 vortec, does both and you don't have to fill up until most of the way home. 06 Yukon XL Denali with 6.0 and 31 gallon tank, better fill up on the way outta town ( coming home). The thirsty LS is part of that, but the 5.7 handles the same loads and trailers that the newer truck did. Even the high bridges on I 10 in LA.
But that's why GM makes both Tahoe and Suburban. Different truck for different needs. I'm on team Burb, but I've had 8 of them in the family since 1980.

Yeah we went mostly cross states in the burb. The tahoe we rarely took on vac but I just remember gas going quick in the tahoe. Btw which design did you like better for the spare? Square body burb where the spare is sunk in the floor or the gmt400 where the spare above the floor?

Count me for Team Burb too. I spent 5-ish years looking for mine, with the intent to eventually make it an "Overland Light" rig. Still biased towards street use, but fully capable of a weeklong getaway to the outdoors.

All the square body Burbs we had ,the spare was in the cargo area. Similar to the 400s. All the room downstairs is needed for the 40 gallon gas tank. And if you've never put a trailer hitch on a square Burb that never had one, I can tell you: no fun at all. No damn room for your hands to work.

I thought they were sunk in the floor so you could see out the glass unlike the 400 where it blocks the glass lol
