if I'm pulling a trailer ever day, it stays in. occasionally once a week, it stays in..any less than that and it comes out. iv had them impossible to get in from rust inside. iv cleaned the inside of my burbs hitch twice because nothing would slide in. theres no clearance on my burbs and that's why I like to keep it in, but if I'm not using it I take it out... see above. :)

my (old) work truck (2009 ram 6.7 cummins fully deleted and supped up) always has a hitch in. if people crack their legs on in they are too damn close to it anyways. LMAO!

if your not pulling stuff all the time, take it out but if you are who cares. someone tried to tell me it was illegal to leave it in, but they couldn't show me a law. I said ok if it is illegal, when this truck gets its yearly commercial inspection they would tell us, at least so it didnt show up with a hitch in, just like how we clean every damn thing out of it before it goes in.

Iv cracked my shin twice, a 3rd time? I think not.

If leaving them in obscures the plate (no matter how little) it's illegal. Obviously not gonna cause an otherwise uninterested cop to flip a ***** and come after you, but absolutely enough grounds for an interested cop to pull you over and have a chat with you. Ask me how I know...

Man guess I'm breaking the law then with my bumper lol. Shes got a 2" ball right in the middle lol. At least hitches are lower I thought. Unless you got that goofy adapter but who has one and goes up..... normally it angles down lol

I did that on my red truck. Got rear ended and damaged the bumper. If I would have had may hitch nothing would have happened. I also has 3 trucks all with hitchs that would be a pain.

Normally when a hitch or the hitch ball gets nailed it usually collapses the frame rails just in front of the brackets where the hitch bolts on.

It would have to be a really had hit. A bump at 5mph to 10 mph isn't going to do anything to the frame. I'm sure the tube going from one end to the other would bend first. If a car hits you hard enough that it bends the frame the hitch wasn't going to save anything.

No it doesn't have to be a bad hit. There's not much to the frames on these trucks. You can bang a trailer into a loading dock hard enough with a 1500 and buckle the rails in front of the hitch. I've repaired and swapped frames on enough of them during a lifetime of collision work to know Derek the Great's statement is on the money.

You can oil the inside of the receiver, problem solved. My receiver has been in for three years now, no rust whatsoever thanks to Krown T40 and Fluid Film.

..Yeah, what a great attitude to have, which essentially boils down to: "Phuck everyone else, ME ME ME! That's all I care about! hahahaha, It's not my problem!" Multiply this by millions of times and yeah, that's the world we live in..

Collision energy even at 5 mph can bend a frame. Vehicles are designed to bend to absorb energy. There are no 5mph or even 3 mph bumpers anymore. With the ball in, all collision energy is transferred thru the sturdy hitch directly to the frame rails, there is no absorption of energy before the frame rails. Without the ball in the bumper and brackets can collapse absorbing some of the energy. Given a certain amount of energy I would always prefer it spread out across the bumper than localized on the hitch.
My hitch ball is in all the time, I switch sizes enough it doesn't rust in, plus mime is not square, the sides are sucked in, kinda hour glass shaped.
I don't know why rattle is an issue, I have never heard mine on any truck.
