What is the newest 14 bolt semi float with posi? Meaning what truck did it come on model and year if anyone knows. I’m building a custom rear axle and it has to be a semi float I want to get something nice with less abuse mileage and rust though thanks in advance

Probably just saying posi in the general sense as describing limited slip. I’m assuming that’s what he meant anyway

I'm pretty sure any half ton with the 6.2 got the 14 bolt even to present day.

I’m not trying to argue with you, just basing this off the link I posted which could very well be wrong but they say “In 2014 this axles was changed to the GM 9.5" 12-bolt axle with a 12 bolt differential cover to distinguish it from this 14 bolt model.”

I had to google the semi float axle to see it’s year range because I didn’t know they were even put in the trucks after GMT400s

GM doesn't use a limited slip in trucks....its either a locker or open.

Semantics, really. I’m sure that’s what the guy meant. And the G80 doesn’t really act like an actual locker anyway

I think 454cid corrected me on this also on a another thread...

So the G80 IS a locker because both wheels do get locked together when it activated. As opposed to a LSD, which allow slippage on one wheel, i.e., left and right wheel turn at different rates.

I don't even know what "Posi" means now. I think some marketing thing from the 70s on muscle or pony car era? Which I think was still LSD?

In retrospect, GM may have marketed the G80 differently, but they didn't, so people gave it the marketing names of yesterday...

When I think "locker" I think air or e locker, which are selectable. The G80 is an automatic locker. It does the selecting on it's own.

Anyways, I'm interested in the OP's question...

Sounds like we're both right. 14 bolt refers to the bolt count holding the ring gear to the carrier. It's merely a coincidence that the cover has 14 bolts. The important thing is that they still make the 9.5" diff, that's what people want when they go for the 14 bolt.
