I'd wait for a cheaper and more abused but well maintained truck. Mileage is just a number. My truck has 255k on it and I've never looked at the odometer and went "Oh boy, getting time to sell this." Doesn't mean that at a given number it's wheels are gonna fall off or anything like that. If it doesn't use oil or make any funny noises, drives straight ect, it's a good vehicle. All you have to do is continue to maintain it so it stays that way.

When I towed that '79 G10 I faced a few hills, kind of rare here in SE Michigan but I94 has 'em and so did the location I bought the van at. Towed it some 80 miles. Sometimes I had to downshift to third, others just 4th. Downshifting is just a natural thing when towing, doesn't indicate you need a bigger engine if the job still gets done. Hell, my fat ass has to downshift my bike when I go up slight grades...

Uses more gas? I still managed just over 15mpg over the tank of gas used when towing that G10. I get about 350 miles to a tank of gas. And yes, I've verified several times that my odometer is logging mileage correctly and I repeat the same procedure every time I fill my tank. Which is to say I fill it until there is gas standing in the filler neck. Probably not smart there, but I've had no issues doing things that way in the three years I've owned this truck. If I drive mostly highway, I can see just under 17mpg but combined, I usually see about 14-15.5. My guess from your sig pic is your TBI trucks most likely had oversized wheels and a lot more truck to pull as well, extended cab long boxes with automatic transmissions... That type of truck is towing any time you drive it.. I dig my TBI truck for occasional towing. It really shines as a DD.

Now, I will admit I've never driven a vortec truck. Taste of honey is worse than none at all I guess, but there's no urge to own one. If I wanted a dedicated tow rig, I'd want a long box regular cab K/3500 with an NV4500 powered by a TBI 454.
