I hear that vehicles often have vins or partial vins in places other than the vin tag, but I rarely hear about specifics other than "the police know where to look".

The vins are stamped all over a vehicle. I come across them doing collision, resto work, rebuilding Harleys and vehicles. On firewall, under a trunk gutter, on the bottom of the package tray, frame rails, etc. When you rebuild a salvage or do a special construction the serial numbers on major components becomes very important when it comes time for inspection by the vehicle theft unit, or whatever they call it in your area, to get a title. The inspection is not about the safety or quality of repairs it's about finding stolen parts and they have the power to confiscate a vehicle for further investigation if they think something's screwy.

Oems have to file a MSO with Dmv to get the original title so the serial numbers for major components are going to be listed on that and kept on file whether a there is a vin stamp on the component or not.

These types of questions usually get asked for a certain reason so I put it out there.

When a friend rebuilt a truck (quite a number of years ago now) he had to keep track of where he got his parts.... I think showing receipts was a big part of it. That was in Michigan.
