98 Silverado maximum payload question.

Gentlemen, I need to pick up a Detroit 4-53 for my K30 project. Can I safely haul this thing with my regular cab short bed? It weighs about 1100 pounds. I'm putting Monroe coil spring shocks in it tomorrow. It's got Goodyear wrangler 235/75R15 tires on it with a 2039 pound maximum load range. Am I nuts ?

1,100 lbs? That's it? Yeah, you have plenty of payload. I'm guessing about 1,400 lbs +/- for C1500.

To find out for sure, go weigh your truck and subtract the weight from the GVWR from the door sticker.

Well that's good news, how about the tires?

Make sure air pressure is good. But with that much (or lack there of) weight I wouldn't worry about it. It's not that much

Thanks, I really don't want to haul anything heavier than a bag of grass seed with this truck. That's what the K30 is for.

Well that's good news, how about the tires?

2,039 lb rating is per tire, right? We hauled a load of tile on my Dad's 89 Sierra RCSB once. It was like 1,500 lbs. P-series tires ride nice, but put a heavy load on them and they feel somewhat mushy. For sure check tire pressures.

Good thing you have a K30 for heavy loads!

Yup, that's the load rating per tire and yeah I got it, why don't I just get the 1100 pound Detroit with the K30 you may ask lol. Well the ol 6.2 is about to pull the pin and it's an 8 hour round trip out to PA and back. It's a brutal beast of a truck that does 55 mph tops. I don't trust that old 6.2 not to scatter the crankshaft half way there.

My 1500 ECSB when stock was 5400# with me and a full tank, GVWR was 6200#. It was pretty wimpy. I don't think you're nuts, but that truck is going to squat and wallow with that load. The farther forward you get the engine in the bed, the better it'll drive.

The payload of the 1500's with the 3/1 springs is less than 1000 lbs. If the SWB truck in question is one of the V6 fleet style trucks the payload may be even less.
