Rare special towing Cam, anyone bought a Oregon Cam Grinding, Inc. 1006 cam??

Although the numbers are great and Ken said years ago a customer whom did a lot of cam swaps for his customers whom towed horse trailers, and that they custom made this cam after a number of trials that this one was THE best and he then ordered it over and over for a number of engines to tow with.

The numbers are @.050 Duration 203 208 Lift is 410 425 (valve 1.5 rocker )and lobe is normally 112 but as this is a special cam I can get 114.

BUT they do not have any records and cannot tell me what the torque peek is, he said he guessed 1500!!!?? He said it makes power from 1000 to 4500.

The cam I am replacing has: @.050 179 192 Lift .350 .381 (valve 1.5 rocker) Lobe 112 and it was rated torque peek at 2200, (yet are said to start at 1800 and run level to 2300)

So anyone know this cam??

No but, here's a similar grind, maybe a little more aggressive i have with 1.6 full roller rockers giving me .466"/.484" (instead of .437"/.454") @ 207/213. It's ground @ 4* advanced for more low end and gives good power through ~5200RPM. Now, I'm guessing you have a 5.7L TBI truck and you're looking at a flat tappet cam (more info helps)? If not, please disregard the above.

Why would they widen the lobe seperation if they were looking for torque? Stock TBI 350 truck cam is 194/203 @ .050, .390/.410 lift, 112 LSA and 108 ICL. The cam you mentioned was a LG4/TBI/TPI 305 peanut cam that also found its way into some B/D-cars with a 350 TBI. Absolute slugs for power and mileage. So much so that the police cars got the L98 cam.

One of the best cams for low-end torque is the GM 395' marine cam. 196/206 @ .050, .431/.451 lift, 109 lsa and 106 icl. That cam is a dog above 2,000 rpm compared to even other stock GM cams.

The stock F/Y car LT1 cam will wipe the floor with the 395' cam anywhere above the converter stall speed.

It was 201/208 @ 0.050, .447/.459 lift, 115 LSA and 115 ICL. I had it in a TBI 355 in my old G20 van. With a performer rpm intake, 454 TBI, Thorley Tri-Ys, 2.5" duals with a X-pipe. Ported swirl ports. Stock converter and 3.08 gears. It would smoke the tires at will and ran really strong past 5,000 rpm. It idled at 550 rpm with 18 in/hg vacuum and the stock TBI computer was happy even without tuning at the time.

I have run both cams in 305s and 350s. Both TBI and Vortec heads. I prefer the LT1 cam. It has a broader powerband and just flat runs better. When you step up the rocker ratio and run full rollers on the LT1 cam it runs even better across the whole powerband. With a little more lift and a tighter LSA it would bring the torque curve in a little sooner.

I tried that as well....A Comp Xtreme 4x4 grind. 206/210 @ .050, .480/.480 lift, 110 LSA, 106 ICL. Had good power with Vortec heads.

L31,
Do you have a part number for that particular LT1 cam? Is this from Chevy Performance?
I don't know that GM still makes it. I believe it had a part number ending in 241 or 705. Mellings makes a stock replacement but they are $$$ compared to some aftermarket cam offereings that do even better.

I'd disagree with the marine cam being a dog above 2000 compared to stock. I did the marine cam and full roller 1.6s and it definitely had more pull over 2000. It was basically like a stock cam on steroids. I still kick around the idea of an F body LT1 cam advanced 4 degrees. The timing set in my truck now has that option and the marine cam came in within .5 degrees of advertised ICL.

I never said compared to the stock L31 cam. I said compared to other stock GM cams. Then referenced an aluminum head LT1 cam.

I used to order from Oregon cam grinding and Delta Cams a lot years ago. The part about "not having any records" That is normal for those two especially for Delta cams. Camshaft timing is CRITICAL, so I learned not to have sloppy people with no records grind my cams. I can tell you story after story, it took me a while to learn my lesson. If you want a custom cam, D. Elgin cams in California has my recommendation, but they will ask you for a ton of info. If you don't really want a custom cam, just a towing cam, there are plenty of professional cam grinders out there that pay close enough attention that they CAN sell you a cam with exact specs. I think a cam is a critical enough component that I would not be messing with either one of the first two.
