Got the filter/pan in and dumped in 2 gallons of ATF. Also failed miserably at extracting the broken stud.

This didn't work worth a ****. My welding helmet is worthless here, so little light escapes that it won't darken my solar powered lens. This caused the bead to wander onto the head. I ground it back flat with a flapwheel, but in order to build a weld to hang a nut off of I need a battery powered helmet.

Well today was something. I sanded down what was there the best I could, wasn't sure if it had bonded with the head. It hadn't. I turned up the heat, got a good stick, and it finally came out.

Looks nasty, huh? I got a nut to stick to that and got it turned out.

I imagine this thing was hanging on by the skin of it's teeth. Once I sanded everything down, I was left with a low spot, so I laid some JB Weld in with a razor blade.

That low spot was right smack in the gasket's sealing surface. I hope it holds, I'll sand it flat tomorrow when it's cured. Next up, I'd picked up the manifolds from getting blasted and painted/baked.

That's VHT flat black and satin clear. I hit them again with the clear and they're drying overnight. First though, I needed to drill and tap for the heat shield that was previously riveted in.

Lastly I pulled the plugs to have a look at how they were doing. I put them in back in Spring of 2017 and it looks like the motor is running clean, but that these plugs may be 1 range too hot since it seems to be rounding the edges of the electrodes in only 20,000mi?

That's 8, 6, 4, and 2 left to right. With the manifold off the head and the plugs still in, when I blew into the oil fill hole air came rushing out of #4. It shot 110# of compression and #2 produced 107ish, both with the throttle closed (doh!) but it proves I don't have a gaping hole in the top of the piston. I assume the valve was open, but even if the intake was also open how the hell could the air get from A to B so easily? I feel the need to take the intake manifold off now as that's the only place I could see this happening, but I can't imagine a leak there flowing so well. On the other hand, it would explain my crankcase pressure issues.

That's going to look great! I've always wanted to do this, but I don't want to risk the problems you've had.... broken studs.

Did you find new heat shields or are yours in good shape? I think my driver's side rusted off.... the area around the holes rusts so the drive screw doesn't hold. The passenger side might be hanging on by one drive screw.

Bolts should certainly work, but drive screws can be had too from places like McMaster-Carr.

I only took this apart because of a broken stud, the #5 heat shield was just dangling from a plug wire. I even managed to free all the head nuts from the studs they were stuck to by soaking in PB Blaster for a few days, putting the studs in a vise 1 by 1, and impacting the nuts off. After soaking, those studs look damn near like new so this is turning out real nice. This truck was super clean until the 2nd owner beat on it for 5 years, so I'm really only pulling off 5 years worth of grime her minus that rear main. God knows how long that was a problem. Next I need to get some of those tar paper inner fender liners from LMC since I never see them in the junkyard so I can keep this all nice and clean.

Forgot to mention that the plug wire heat shields are in good shape, just need a good cleaning as they're a bit sticky with motor oil and dirt.

Hello there. been watching this tread for awhile and just wanted to say i had to do the drums on my 98 3/4 ton Suburban and i hated every second of it. gonna have a shop do i next time. i also had to use a 3/8 to drill out like you did. my old brakes weren't as worn as yours but they were cracking so i replaced them. sat in my driveway for 3 weeks on jack stands.

I make and sell those inner fender liners. PM me if you'd like.
