Greetings from Calgary Alberta, Canada!

I thought I made a "hello" post before, but it looks like i haven't, so I'll remedy this now;
I was referred here from a facebook group, when I asked for a good forum for my truck.

I have a 1992 Chevrolet Sport 4x4;
The truck is white paint on red cloth interior;
The truck has never left the family.
My grandfather bought it new, then after about a decade of ownership he passed it on to his youngest son, who passed it to his two sons, then after years of gentle prodding, I was rewarded last spring with a phone call from my cousin with an offer to sell.

Pros:
Family ties (this is the most special part to me)
Never modified*
Very well maintained
Not a rust bucket
Short box/fleetside

Cons:
Has original "defective" paint
Has the start of rust in one cab corner
Has surface rust on the front passenger side of the roof from being paintless for so long
The stereo EQ seems non-functional
I am starting to notice parts might be a bit hard to find for this truck.

When I got it from my cousin last spring all it needed to pass a safety was have the idler arm replaced.
I have observed since that time I have an intermittent "brake" light, which I am assuming is from a switch somewhere tied into the parking brake(?), and that the oil pressure (on the gauge) reads low when the truck is sufficiently warmed, and stopped/at idle.

Regarding the "not modified*" bit, my grandfather had a snap-on vinyl winter grille cover added to the truck, an alarm system added, had a flat full length fibreglass box topper installed, and added a hitch to tow his boat.

Unfortunately for me, my grandfather was so meticulous on the care of his truck that during his ownership he never required to take up GM on their complimentary repaints. My uncle took great care, and went through many bottles of touch up paint - when it did finally start to come off in small sheets rather than lakes, he just gave up, and passed it onto his eldest son.

I would like to if possible, buy a replacement drivers door panel**, a replacement dashboard gauge pod holder***, and a replacement centre dash vent panel****.
I was thinking about buying a colour match cup holder.
I need to buy a replacement rear window latch, because my boy (four at the time) promptly broke it (thankfully my grandfather made little painted wooden "locks" for the rear glass).
I will also need to replace the rear bumper, as the passenger side is rusting away quite badly from what I can only assume is twenty-eight years of exhaust fumes creating condensation on the back of the bumper.

** = this is because the cloth is thin on the top from years of my cousins driving with their arm out the window!
*** = if that's what it's called; it attaches to the dash and holds the gauges ect.
**** = because the alarm "armed" light is mounted here, so a hole is drilled in it directly above the vents.

When the weather warms up, I will verify the oil pressure and take it from there, as well as remove the alarm, fix a slight steering wheel alignment, and look into why the stereo has stopped making sound out of the passenger side speakers.
I will get around to replacing the grille, but in the grand scheme of things, this is further down the list.

I recently found and purchased a replacement set of 1992 correct "Sport 4x4" box side decals, then today I came across this link: HERE

Can any of you tell me if those production numbers are correct?
That is incredibly low!!
With a total production of 385 (149 for Canada), it's no wonder I had such a hard time finding someone who offered the correct box side decals!!

It took a while to fumble through it, but I finally figured out how to load pictures, so here are some pictures of my truck.

/\ I just noticed this picture was taken BEFORE I did a thorough cleaning of the truck... so please look past the dirt ect.

Well, there it is, and here I am.

I'd appreciate any tips, advice or information that members might be able to offer.

:)

hmm, I must have done something wrong with the uploads... lemme see if I can fix it so they are visible.

EDIT:
I think I have fixed it, please someone let me know if the images are visible;
I have changed the folder they are in to "members only" - I previously had them set to private thinking that this was just a folder access thing, not a visibility thing.

Welcome to the forum. Your truck screams potential. A good paint job, or even a cheap one will do wonders. These are grate trucks. I had my 97 repainted in 2013. It still looks as good today as the day I took it home from the body shop. I only paid $865 for my paint job, but I do take care of it. I keep it waxed about once a month or so. The bottom pic is a little older. You can see I have buffed and polished out my OE rims since then. The black strips were an extra $100. $865 did include them.

As far as your stereo EQ being nonfunctional - that's a result of the amplifier under the dash being the wrong model for that style of radio head/cassette combo. There's a 2-band EQ amp that goes with the head that has Bass/Treb buttons on it and a mechanical cassette deck with no EQ, and there's a 5-band EQ amp that goes with the style stereo/cassette you have in that truck. Someone mixed and matched parts and that's the result. The 2 bands will still work, but it's basically just like using the bass/treble buttons on a head that's designed to work with that amp.

You could just get the head that looks like this one:

Which goes with this style cassette deck (tho either cassette WILL work)

Barring that, replace the amp unit beside the accelerator with one that runs all 5 EQ bands.

I don't have a list of part numbers for each style, but you could probably find one at a u-pull-it yard. It'll look like this:

They should let it go cheap. It may fix your passenger audio problem too, unless you still have the factory speakers in there... In which case, replace them lol.

I just thought of something else that could be the case.. There's a plug with a few wires on it coming from the radio head that should plug into the back of the cassette deck unit, that may be unplugged causing the EQ to not work. That might be the good place to start.

I can't thank you enough for your post!

I will look into the plug.

I have been looking into this, and this was to me at least, the logical answer;

I tried to contact my cousin and uncle who used to own the truck to see if this was swapped, but to this point I haven't heard back from them.

If the plug from the radio control to the cassette/eq slave is tight, I will take the opportunity to grab another CDM before the local yard is invariably closed because of this corona crap going on...

I have been on ebay looking at listings to figure out which part number it is that I should need.

wait a second!!

@AK49BWL - thanks again!

I was just sitting here, rethinking this, and it MUST be the wrong CDM;
Unfortunately I still have not heard from my uncle or cousin, but this MUST be the answer, and here's why:

This past weekend I purchased a whole schwack of "replacement parts from other trucks (I had unbelievably fantastic luck);
And when I got home on Saturday with replacement stereo parts, I plugged them both into the CDM, and saw this:

I can be sure those were connected securely, ergo, the CDM must be the issue.

So, hopefully the snow breaks just enough today for me to try to find a replacement CDM to swap in the truck, incase my province (eg: state) goes into lock down as other states seem to be doing right now... I mean a guy's gotta have projects right!?

speaking of projects, here's what I found this weekend:

(my original lens is already swapped into the grey housing on the left; I was surprised with the subtle differences!)

Replacement radio, and HVAC.

I found a lightly faded, but completely unbroken gauge surround;
I took the trim with it, even though it's the wrong piece;
I also grabbed the light switch, which is far from perfect, but an upgrade from mine which has absolutely no white stencilling on it to indicate what the buttons are for.

full

I scored a replacement door panel;
the vent is a little broken, but that shouldn't be a big problem.
I also found another set of sun visors - and the drivers side one doesn't have an elastic that's akin to a "wizard's sleeve" lol

I also found a correct, much less faded gauge cluster (400kpa = 60psi);

And then this one was fun;

Even though it's the wrong colour, the price was such that I figured I could try it, and see if it works, or I like it;
Right now my principal concern is that with the kids in the car, this might be right in the way, and get repeatedly knocked.

Anyway.. there's an update of sorts.
