No replacement for displacement!!!! I never had a 383 so can't compare. But in order to use a stock 400 crank in a 350 block, need to turn the mains down to match the 350. 400 uses bigger main bearings. But you can buy a stroker crank all ready to drop into a 350 block. I've seen some pretty nasty 400 builds, all using factory blocks. one was a 433 that made 800 horse I think. I'm half tempted to build a 433, I have a Ramjet intake, but might put a small turbo on it, and would prolly split the block in half being boosted. I wouldn't worry bout using a stock block....
