I paid $800 for my factory block with all that stuff already done. I know one aftermarket block I looked at didn't come machined, so would have to spend an additional grand prolly to get ready to build. 400s were built from 1970 to 1980.

How much advantage is an actual 400 block vs just building a 383? It seems to me it would be better all the way around to have the long stroke of the 400 but the stability of the 350 block. Plus if you have to buy a new crank, it isn't that much more to buy the stroker version...

No replacement for displacement!!!! I never had a 383 so can't compare. But in order to use a stock 400 crank in a 350 block, need to turn the mains down to match the 350. 400 uses bigger main bearings. But you can buy a stroker crank all ready to drop into a 350 block. I've seen some pretty nasty 400 builds, all using factory blocks. one was a 433 that made 800 horse I think. I'm half tempted to build a 433, I have a Ramjet intake, but might put a small turbo on it, and would prolly split the block in half being boosted. I wouldn't worry bout using a stock block....

I just put a 400 with TPI in my 3500 Crew Cab that pulls a 11k lb trailer and I love it. It has 454 power and 350 gas mileage

You can google imagines there is one that a guy built using the ramJet on a Vortec setup. That gave me the idea for my builds. Here is a pic of test fitting the AC with the Ram Jet on one of mine. I have come up with a plate that moves AC over and now most any intake will fit.

This is my plan when and if the stock 350 on my 1992 RCSB goes south. I'd probably start with the Dart block and go from there. Dart fixes the oiling system issues in their blocks. Plan as it stands is to build a TPI fed 406 with an emphasis on low-midrange power.

Another cool thing about aftermarket blocks is you can get 4.250 bore, matched with a 4" stroke you have the factory bore/stroke of a 454 BBC with the size and weight of a SBC

SBC bore-center distance is 4.40. With a 4.250 bore, that leaves 0.150 between the cylinders--just over an eighth-inch.

How do they get a gasket to seal on that little space? How much do the head gaskets cost? How are the head gaskets made--copper sheet, or MLS?

I'm guessing a .030 overbore when it wears-out is out-of-the-question.
