My 98 2500 came in 2 versions , 7200# 6 lug and 8600# 8 lug. I have 8600# SCLB, 8 lug. Says right in manual and on window option sheet 8600# rating.

Yeah, "regular" 2500 were 8 lug and "Light Duty (LD)" were 6 lug. There we no 2500"HD" in that era...

Pretty damn confusing!

OP has 8 lug. I think it's the 14 bolt, 8 lug semi-float rear end.

My 98 has it on the title 2500hd. 8 lug GMT400's are HD trucks in 01' gm just decided to start putting it on the door that does not mean anything before 01' is not an hd. My 80' k20 is an 8600 gvw truck with HD suspension package printed right on the RPO sheet.

The rear end is a corporate 14 bolt semi float. There are people who don't like them but I have 2 of them on the road and both are doing great I like them.

GM loves to mix things up. The 2500 rear end that is in my 1500 Express is a full float 10.5" 14-bolt. Started life with a G80 4.10 behind a 4.3/4L80E.

Yeah I just bought it a few weeks ago for 600 bucks. It's already proving itself. It gets better everytime I change a part on it. Can't wait.
