Greetings,

Has anyone with a stock 1996 5.7L Vortec replaced the timing chain/gear set? I can't seem to figure out what set is required.

What I have:
1996 GMC Yukon, 2WD
5.7L VIN R
4L60-E transmission
167,000 miles

Looking at just the timing chain, the AC Delco site lists this part number for a 1996 5.7L Vortec VIN R with 4L60-E transmission: 14087014

However, that part number at RockAuto has a concerning description (assuming it's correct): Double-roller with 48 links. The other chains for that same model year and engine appear to all have 46 links and have different widths (0.275/0.280 in or 0.400 in). The other chains also appear to have four plates per link while the ACDelco chain has nine plates per link (that's interesting...).

Thought I'd punt and search for a set/components at Cloyes, but it doesn't list any timing parts for the 1996 5.7L engine at all. It does list parts for the 1995 5.7L and the 1997 5.7L though. The parts for the 1995 5.7L are different than the 1997 5.7L. I'm assuming that's because the 1995 is TBI and the 1997 is Vortec.

Just for fun, I looked at 1AAuto as well. The chain they sell looks just like the ACDelco 14087014. It's spec says it's 0.400 in wide with 46 links (not 48). However, they specify it's for the engine mated to a 4L80-E transmission.

Tried Melling as well. For a 1996 5.7L they list two different widths of timing sets and both say Vortec in the description: 3-202SA (0.275 roller timing chain) and 3-506SB (0.400 silent timing chain).

Since this is my daily driver, I can't be down that long; so, I figured I'd check the local parts stores so when I take current timing set out of the engine, I can compare it to what they have in stock. However, Napa/Oreilly/AdvanceAuto/Autozone don't have the timing set for this engine in stock.

So.....

Any words of wisdom?

thx,
andy

If the chain is wore so are the gears. Buy a timing set and there are Melling, Cloyes etc listed on Rock auto. Link chains have more plates then a double roller. Some blocks have a boss on the block that needs clearancing if using a double roller. The silent type have a nylon coated cam gear and the coating is what usually fails. With the exception on the double roller needing clearancing any will go on and fit behind the cover. Buying a set gets you away from this one is x wide and that one has x teeth etc.

Double roller will not fit behind a Vortec reluctor. Would recomeend the single roller chain for a 4L80E application.

I’m definitely looking at a set.

A rep at Cloyes recommended the C-3017 (0.400in) set based on the AC Delco chain reference.

https://www.cloyes.com/part-finder/

However C-3092 (0.275) is also listed as an option.

My concern is interference with crank position sensor.

Probably just purchase both and return the one that doesn’t fit.

Thx

Single roller clears the reluctor just fine. All the 1-ton Vortecs have it. It was also what I put in my 350 and have in my 383. Was also used in the Marine Vortecs with a reluctor.

The service-replacement '91Caprice TBI (roller cam) crate engine I bought ~20 years ago had a parts notice, early production was "silent link" timing chain, later production was "single roller".

Either works as a complete set, but not when mixing individual parts.

Be aware that OEM roller-cams use a smaller bolt circle on the cam gear than the older, traditional flat-tappet camshaft and cam gear. I got caught on that when I slapped an OEM-style roller cam in my 454 marine engine. Had to buy a special adapter to connect the cam-driven marine water pump because the bolt circle on the original one was too large.

I don't know if similar-year flat-tappet cams have the smaller bolt circle, or the larger bolt circle. My guess is that if the cam does not use a thrust plate like the roller cam, the bolt circle is larger.
