So here’s what I’ve done so far the motor and trans are out of the truck. I plan on a mild build like cam bore and valve springs that’s probably it. I really want to put a 5speed trans in it it’s got the 4l60e in it now. I just finished swapping a 4 speed in a 68 c30 that originally had the 3speed column shift it was very straight forward. I know that won’t be the case for my 98 I just want some advice I’m not against buying a whole parts truck (I’ve been wanting to do that any for nickel and dime stuff) but I didn’t know if it’d be easier to buy just a transmission. Here’s the trucks specs

Well,. I did my swap last year. And I went the route of buying parts separately. Here's the complete part list for a nv3500 swap.

Transmission (obviously)
Transfer case*
Flywheel
Clutch assembly
Pilot bearing
Slave cylinder
Clutch master cylinder
Clutch hydraulic line
Clutch pedal and mounting bracket
Brake pedal**
Shifter

*You can use your auto transfer case but you'll have to change the input shaft to the larger 32 spine

** You can cut down the factory pedal to fit the smaller rubber.

It also takes a bit of wiring to get the neutral safety, reverse lights, and possibly 4wd sensors to work.

Overall I spent about $1200 on the swap buying as many new parts as I could find.

How about the ECM? Won't it throw a bunch of codes since it's looking for inputs from the A/T?

Mine didn't. Other than having to bypass the neutral safety. The cruise control even worked. Although it won't shut off when you push the clutch, so you'll have to do it manually or tap the brake.

If you had to do it again what would you do?

Well. If I could find a whole truck for like $500, I'd go that route. But 5speed trucks are getting hard to find cheap. Buying everything separate is easier and takes half the work. Plus everything but the actual gearboxs are brand new.

The NV3500 had a 32 spline output? I converted my push button case to 32 spline and while I was in there replaced shift fork pads and did a c clip eliminator.

Only thing I can say is check the harness. It's easy to pinch a wire under the bell housing. Also check your grounds.
