So the cooling system saga continues. On Friday I drained the radiator, and made a solution of Cascade and TSP. About 1/2 cup of each in a gallon of hot water. Filled the rest of the way with straight water. Ran for about an hour, then drained.

The **** coming out was basically black. The radiator is visibly cleaner. Much of the Dexcool sludge was removed. Surprisingly, to me anyway, more rust chunks came out, and the block drains were again plugged solid.

I ran the truck for 5min or so with the hose, flushing until clear. Drained and filled with a slightly stronger mixture of the same solution. I’ll run my errands this week with the truck, then drain on the weekend. Hopefully by then, this thing starts coming out clean.

A week? Have you done that before, or read of it working for others? I'd be nervous it would eat the aluminum going that long.

Supposedly the dishwasher detergent isn’t corrosive, where as the CLR is. You’ve got me worried now though.

We are supposed to get a lot of rain starting tomorrow. Maybe I’ll just drain it then. Neighbors have been giving me the stink eye with all that brown **** running down my driveway into the street.

Aluminum is sensitive to alkaline chemicals. Dishwasher detergent is alkaline, and TSP likely is too. Doing it for a short period is fine... it's often done for oil contamination, but I wouln't run it a week.

Thanks for the heads up. I’m sure my intake manifold thanks you for it. I ran the truck around town tonight for 30-45min. When I get home from work tomorrow I’ll drain it all out and flush with the hose again. Going forward, I sure hope to see less junk coming out.

And radiator and heater core. Even if it stays dirty looking, I'm sure it'll probably cool fine. Mine looks grungy, even after cleaning, and it cools fine. I've had a intake manifold leak forever, so I'm always getting air in the system.

Well it’s been a month. I flushed with the hose repeatedly, but coolant still ends up brown. Satisfied with just brown coolant, and no more chunks of rust, I called it good till spring. Still need to get a BBC radiator in this thing, but it’s going to sit in my driveway all winter, so no rush there.

I present you all with the latest in the cooling system saga:

The ever popular leaking heater core. Perhaps my concoction was a bit too aggressive. Maybe it’s just a 20 year old heater core. Either way I’m not surprised, but that doesn’t make the kick in the balls any less painful. Not sure how I’m going to hide this one from the wife. I can hear the “I told you so’s” already. She hates that I bought a 20 year old truck instead of new.

Just consulted with the service manual. Got to steps 8-9 and puked. Going to spend the rest of the night trying not to suck start my 1911.

I guess I can replace that sun ravaged dash now. Be a good time to address that pesky cowl screw that leaks. Anything else I should do while in there? Looks like I’m back to the the junkyard for a nice dash.
