Seems the seals blown out in my NV4500 last week. No idea how it got this bad this quick. But that's not here nor there. It's hasn't even been wet

I can't find the GL4 Castrol Syntorq fluid anywhere in town. Found some Royal Purple Max Gear 75w90 that's gl4. I'm throwing out about a quart per 400 miles. I have a rebuild appointment made to get the trans rebuilt. He said about $600.

I was told by the Dodge dealership that the The Chrysler part number 12346191and the GM part number 4637579 are now cross referenced to ATF. Doesn't seem right. And neither dealership carriers the correct gear oil for it. And the lead mechanic said to drop dino oil in it and drive it without the synchros once they go bad. Just double clutch it. Being I don't know anything mechanical about transmissions and I can't get an appointment with my trans guy until the beginning of November, I don't know what to do.

I can't NOT drive it since it's my only vehicle within 300 miles and I'm over here in a another state doing training with my job.

So I can either

1. Run some Royal purple and try to keep it topped off. $24 a quart

2. Run some dino oil and keep it topped off but might damage my synchros $6 a quart but "drive it double clutching"

3. Some some pennzoil Synchromesh which seems to be GL4 but a bit thinner than the 75w90 but thicker than the ATF $9 a quart.

Can anyone tell me where the level is supposed to be compared to the full plug? I have heard fill till it pours out, others say fill half way. I'm trying to top it off, maybe I put too much in it which caused the blown seal. Yes I used Royal Purple to top it off orginally

I've not had trouble finding GM synthetic trans lube #12346190 locally at the dealer. That's all I would use, period. Castrol doesn't sell it direct.

Premier Transmission in Tomball can build it but I don't think for $600.. only trans shop i trust, period.

I have yet to put my NV4500 in my truck but I did plenty of research before buying fluid for it and the AMSOIL MTG is the only oil that specifically has the NV4500 listed on the bottle and says that it replaces the GM and Chrysler part numbers for that trans.

AMSOIL said:
Ideal for NV-4500 Transmissions

MTG is a thermally stable, extreme pressure formulation that resists heat, oxidation, acid build-up and varnish. It is the ideal gear lube for high temperature applications, including the New Venture NV-4500 transmission, which retains heat due to its cast iron housing and is often subjected to heavy loads and high torque from turbo-diesel engines.

AMSOIL MTG is the replacement fluid for GM part #12346190 and Chrysler part #4874459 (Chrysler specification #MS-9070).

Applications

Recommended for synchronized manual transmissions and transaxles that require 75W-85, 75W-90 or 80W-90 viscosities and any of the following performance specifications: API GL-4 and MT-1, ZF TE-ML 02B, 16A, 17A and 19A, Chrysler MS-9070, MAN 341 ML. Recommended for use in NV 4500 transmissions, and replaces GM part #12346190 and Chrysler part #4874459.

If you buy into Amsoil that's your thing, fine, dunno how much it costs but I'd personally stick with the GM-labeled Castrol product at around $20-ish a quart.

I had a automatic transmission rebuilt by them a long time ago. Forgot the name of the place. Expensive but definitely worth it. I appreciate it, and will give him a call.

The GM fluid is better, but the Amsoil works good.

My new to me 1992 C3500 with 40K miles on it....(yes indeed 40K miles) has the NV450. 3rd gear syncro was out. The rest of the gear clearly showed a 40K mile machine. I guarantee that the previous owner filled it with GL5 5 years earlier and that destroyed the synchro. I found Redline MT85 one gallon for 65 bucks delivered. Thats what I put in it. Hoping for the best.
