I'd like to tow a 6,880 pound travel trailer (loaded with everything its about 7,400 not including other people in the truck) and the max towing for the truck says 7500lbs which seems kind of low for a 2500. Will my truck be ok? side note for the trucks made before 95 the max towing was 8,500lbs , does any one know why the change? my truck is a 1997, 5.7 with 4.10 gears. 106,000 miles.

As long as your frame is in good shape, and you don't overload the ball you should be fine. I wouldn't climb the Rockies or anything. Manufacturers tend to be a bit conservative with their ratings for legal reasons.

And I'd say 96 is when they started the HD package. But thats just a guess

Damn. Are you doing hotshot work? Moving campers or something. I mean. You can do it. But multiple cross country trips at Max load is wear her out fast. Prolly cost u a small fortune in fuel and parts. I don't often recommend this. But if you wanna drive 600miles a day. Get a new truck. With a good warranty

Oh. And Chevy did have an HD package. It just wasn't branded. That's why some 2500s have 6lug and others 8

Your close enough that you should be fine, just make sure you have good fresh fluid in everything, your brakes are good to go, and your engine has a fresh tune up.

I tow a 6500GVW camper with a 1996 1500 Suburban. 4 people and all our stuff. We have even done 6 people, but that was only down I95 on the east coast. Not as flat as you would expect, but no huge mountains either.

3.73's and tow package. It does the job. I lock out overdrive and set the cruise around 60.

I have the better later model cooling fan and the heaviest duty fan clutch they had, and a catless manderel bent mid pipe. Some brake and suspension mods since it is a 1500, but you are good there with a 2500.

If you have the 5 blade metal fan it would be worthwhile to upgrade yours. Rockauto sells them for around $50 No comparison between the two. You should have the big factory mid pipes already since it is a 2500 so you are good there too.

Expect it to downshift on hills. you will slow down and maybe hit 2nd on really serious grades. But it will do the work, just keep and eye on the engine temp.

On top of these other recommendations, I would get a trans temp gauge, It's pretty easy to keep the engine inside a good operating temp range and still smoke the trans. Don't ask me how I know that one....

Tachrev, nice slip-on tow mirrors.
Nice looking rig. Swapping a GMC grille on my blue Suburban soon.
