First and foremost. i am not a fabricator or mechanic, but ive been under neath cars when i was still in a car seat with my old man, over many years taught myself better ways to weld from books and youtube videos.

i cannot justify buying rock tamers for like 300ish bucks? so i built one for all of about 60.

whats needed
bolts and nuts
drill
drill bits
welder (not necessary)
lights
mudflaps

Start with 7ft of 3/16ths angle. excessive, yes. but i like things overbuilt better then under. i went with 6ft and it was to short. also went 2x2 which seemed to be a good choice. not to heavy surprisingly. drill 3 holes in it on either side and lay it all out

then drill holes for the lights and paint it (i used spray on bedliner)

my gen 1. it was garbage and thats why i am building v2

for the hitch mount i bought 2 90 degree ends, then welded them in the center then welded in a piece of flat to the bottom, you could always bolt it in too i guess and bend a hitch mount for it

now wire in the lights using the + and - off the tail light, yes i did this on my 2010 because i tow more with it then 6.5... odd i know.

then i ran a 2 wire connector down through the license plate for the lights and there we have it!

not a nice 300 dollar one, but it still works for me.

total cost: metal 22 ish dollars
lights 25
flaps 6 bucks each
bedliner: 9 bucks
beer: 18 bucks for a 6 pack
my time: an hour.

Looks good to me !

Im going to be building a set as well, I picked up some cheap mud flaps from princess auto and have some surplus galvanized angle iron. It'll be better then nothing on the gravel roads when towing the boat.

Being from PA I'd think you'd be drinking Yuengling. I got turned on to some when I went to Six Sigma Black Belt training in Sharon, our Corporate offices were in Greenville, PA - pretty good stuff.

Exactly my thoughts. And an easier thing to do then buying 300 dollar flaps

$18 for a 6 pack?!

Haha, welcome to Canada.
