5.7 is idling pretty bad and smells like gas out of the exhaust. No check engine light and the last time I changed the plugs they smelled like gas. Any common problems with these or any suggestions on what to check out. Tia.

Check the spray pattern on the injectors and the fuel pressure regulator. There are very few ways for too much gas to get in there.

Check for stored codes, Get engine to op temp and hook a scanner up and watch your fuel trims ( Block Learn less than 118?) and O2 sensor( fixed above .7 volts for more than 50 seconds in closed loop?) check your timing (0 degrees with EST by pass disconnected), check your fuel pressure, is it to high? ( 9-13 psi is spec) Disconnect the MAP sensor and see if the rich condition clears up, check for leaking fuel injectors, is the fuel pressure regulator leaking? ( fuel in the vacuum line to the regulator?) faulty TPS? Check your canister purge to see if it is saturated.

Actually there are quite a few causes for excess fuel. See code 45 Rich exhaust indicated diagnostic aides Section 3 Page 68 in the Fuel and emissions Service manual:waytogo:

I kinda agree with that. There are a bunch of things that can cause the problem, but only a few ways for the excess fuel to get in the door. I was suggesting to check those doors first to see where it's coming from, then you can narrow the field to who is opening the door.

Thanks guys for the info, I'll check what I can, kinda limited with no diagnostic tools. I tried the jumper wire in the port and it only showed code 12, if I read it right. The trucks been sitting for years after I had a bunch of problems out of it. Finally decided to put a new cluctch in and fuel pump.

Spray pattern looked good and disconnected the map sensor and it ran a little worse.

If it’s been sitting the gas could be bad and not burning.

Have you gotten it up to operating temp and driven it at highway speeds?

I put a new fuel pump in it, twice, and it has good gas. I've got it up to operating temp but haven't driven it at highway speeds.

When it's first cranked and idled up it runs fine, none of the gas smell and slight smoke. If I turn the a.c. on it really bogs it down.
