....oil filter to replace the dinky filter in its ridiculous OEM location--where did you install the remote location? I've been all over my K1500 with 5.7 and can't find a spot I like.

I'd also like to install a remote trans filter and a power steering filter too.......

96 and 97 K1500's, 5.7's, 4L60E's.

Typical aftermarket PS filter goes in-line on the return hose. Buy the filter based on hose ID, typically 3/8".

External trans filter is fine in addition to the one in the pan. You wouldn't want to pull debris out of the pan and run it through the pump before filtering the crap out.

External full-flow oil filter is largely a waste of time, money, effort, and enthusiasm--and adds additional leak points to what could be a fairly simple system. I've become fond of external bypass oil filters (partial-flow) for extra-fine filtering. I've bought a bunch of Frantz ******* oil filters on eBay over the years. Main problem is getting a roll of ******* that fits the canister--modern toilet paper rolls have wrong-sized roll dimensions and poor paper quality.

Bypass oil filter kits are available from Amsoil and from Frantz.

I've alway wanted a remote oil filter, but have never done it. Now, I'm not sure I want the extra lines, and I've kind of gotten use to dumping oil on the front u-joint.

I did install a filter in the power steering return line... it's just a little thing though, not a big huge spin-on. I actually cut the original line and used the filter to connect it to the new line, and then secured it with a zip-tie so the belt would catch it. I may change it later because one of the connections seems to be weeping just slightly.

I usually place a plastic cup under the filter when I pull it off so I dont get oil on the u-joint

I'm going to install a larger spin on PH8 size filter for my PS. I already have a GMT 800 PS cooler installed. I've talked to several shops who have said GM trucks with PS coolers seem to have the steering gear boxes and PS pumps last longer--plus filtration is mo' better.......

I've debated about just using a pickup in the trans and relying on a remote filter, but I'm concerned about the same thing you mention.

The filter in the 4wd's are about half the filtration area as the 2wd filters. The factory size filters are small for a truck motor of that size. GM simply had to compromise to make space for the front driveshaft. Indeed, I've been considering a dual filter setup for the motor.

Although I like your idea of a bypass filter.

I referenced this when I added an inline filter to my 2014 Silverado. I added mine in between the line coming out of the trans and the cooler. Worked out great. I used the following:

Derale 13005 with brass fittings
WIX 51269 filter
Gates 3/8" transmission hose with stainless clamps

They are the ones I have on my PS lines though not branded Raybestos. Two, one in the PS return line and the other in the HydroBoost return line.
The clamps were on the flimsy side so I replaced them with stouter. Anyone contemplating fitting these should be prepared to do the same.
