First thread I’ve seen on here snowmobile related lol

Where to even start.....well I’ve always had an AC in the family. Started riding an ‘80 Jag when I was 5. Went to a ‘70 Ski Doo Nordic, then a ‘73 Cheetah 440, then ‘87 Yamaha Exciter 570 and rode that for quite awhile. My late father bought a new Z 570 in ‘02 initially for my brother, but I rode it. My dad wrecked his ‘98 ZRT 600 in March 2002 so he bought a new ‘03 ZR 800 at the Novi Snow Show that year. Fast forward to now.....my dad passed away in 2010, but I still have the Z (5,200 miles) and ZR (9,600 miles).

Last year when I was in the UP, I blew out the rear suspension on the ZR and tire up some of the rear end. So that’s kind of what started this thread. It’s mostly for me to keep track of work I do to it, but feel free to comment to!

The last trip I had the ZR on last winter. Blew the suspension to complete hell lol. A side note, it was a great time and the trails were good except for a few sections.

So last year I noticed the ZR felt like it was loosing power. It may have been in my head, but it didn’t seem to run like it used to. Did a compression test and it was 112 psi in each cylinder. I believe it’s supposed to be around 124 from the factory or close to it.

Decided while I was going to rebuild all the shocks, I may as well throw in a new top end too. Went and grabbed new jackshaft and driveshaft bearings while I was at it.

Went out and bought a top end rebuild kit last week. Using SPI pistons will all new Winderosa gaskets. My in-laws are in town this week to see our baby girl so me and my father in law have been working on it in the evenings.

For the most part it cane apart great. The factory pistons and cylinders look great for 9,600 miles.

While I was at it, I decided to clean the hell out of the underhood area. It was filthy from sitting all last summer. Pulled both the primary and secondary clutches since I have to clean them next.

Started reassembly yesterday afternoon. There wasn’t much to it really. We stopped for the day after we got the heads torqued down.

I had an 84 AC 440 Panther. It was a long track and wide track version. It was pretty decent until it caught fire. I hiked 12 miles back (royally sucked) and went back for it the next day. Some ******* stole it! That was 1998. I haven't been on one since.

My whole family has been snowmobiling since the 70’s. I’ve been on one since I was old enough to walk lol.

Have today and tomorrow off work so we finished bolting the power valves back to the head. Also painted the Y pipe with some high heat paint before bolting it back up.

Next up is work on both clutches. Built a homemade clutch compressor, then pulled and disassembled the secondary and found the bushings inside the weights were shot and starting to elongate the holes in the weights. Not to mention it was dirty as hell and needed a good cleaning. So, off for new parts tomorrow morning.

The secondary just needed a good cleaning, but I think I may look into an EPI clutch kit for it. The clutch engages pretty good from the factory as it’s the Sno Pro package, but I’d like a little more grunt.

Right before I came in the house for the night, I decided to address the factory pipe which was looking rough. Removed the heat shield and insulation and sprayed the pipe with some high heat paint. Then polished the heat shield with a Mother’s Powerball. Didn’t turn out perfect, but it looks a lot better. Also have to polish my Rumble Pack can too so it can tie in with the clean exhaust.

My EPI clutch kit came in last week. Came with new springs, helix and weights. Tore into it a little before work the other day, but haven’t got much done yet.

I've been riding sleds since I was about 12. My grandpa ALWAYS had a garage full of them that he was working on in the fall/winter months. He took a Sno-Jet in as partial payment, and fixed it up so I could ride it. I loved that thing!

I had no clue that they made any over 600 with twin cylinder. I thought that everything over 600ish was triple? Learn something new every day.
