Anyone know how to replace the steering wheel on a 96 K1500? I haven't had much luck in finding a video that actually shows how to replace the steering wheel on a 96 K1500. Has anyone done it before? Also what parts do I need to get as well? I'm looking at this steering wheel hub adapter. Is there anything better? I've seen a couple of videos where they take the steering wheel off ,but I don't really know what hub adapter I need.

Removing the wheel should be pretty straightforward. I've never removed one off a 96, or any gmt400 for that matter, but there's likely a couple of screws holding the airbag in that you have to take out from behid the wheel, you may need to turn it to get to them. Make sure your battery is disconnected and be careful with the airbag. Once that's out you just need a steering wheel puller, you can rent one from the parts store.

0:50-3:00 for removal, 12:20-14:33 for re-install. They don't mention it but I'd recommend leaving the steering wheel nut on a few threads while knocking the steering wheel off so it doesn't come flying towards your face. Or you could get a steering wheel puller (I've heard that this steering wheel is quite tough to free from the car).

Thank you for the video ,but what if I wanted to install a custom steering wheel and not my stock steering wheel. Mine is sort of disintegrating. Do I have to take out the clock spring or can I leave that in?

Unfortunately I am not going to have a solid answer for that question. That being said, I'd take what I'm about to say worth a grain of salt because I've never ran a custom steering wheel on my truck. I'd think you do have to leave the clockspring in to maintain the horn. I'm not sure what other components would be affected if you removed the clockspring. Possibly if anyone is running a custom wheel on their 96+ truck they can chime in.

In order to run a aftermarket wheel, you have to use hub adapter from the pre air bag trucks. Keep in mind this is illegal to purposely disable the airbag system. I am not responsible for your truck or what you do to it, i am only answering your questions. In order to get that hub adapter to work you have to remove the clock spring which also makes the horn not work. You also have to grind the lip off the plastic so the hub adapter doesnt catch. So yes it can be done, but its illegal and i do not advise it on a street legal vehicle.

Ok. Thanks! Guess I'm going to take the plunge for all of us on the forum. I'll have to see where my finances lay and hopefully I can score that Momo steering wheel off of eBay that's on an auction and that would save me a bunch of money and I'd have a quick release steering wheel. NRG has a kit that's supposed to fit so hopefully it will it's listed as fitting my year of truck.

On my 96 Yukon the horn is not wired through the clockspring. It does feed through the multi-function switch though.
