Gonna start with this simple hack that will bring my 88' closer to 2018. It's an Ebay dual USB port install because I just hated not being able to close my ashtray while driving because the plug would stick out to far and my OCD was kicking in hard. It was ordered in green to match the stock green in the gauges and radio. Everytime I parked I'd have to unplug my charger and put it away, never want anything worth stealing in site of potential snatch and grab thieves so I always tuck and close. Not sure if it's been done on here before but it's probably worth revisiting ...because life is so much easier now. 8 bucks on Ebay and 30 min total invested.

Pro Tip: Use an ignition source from the fuse box as the cigarette lighter power is constant and therefore the USB stays lit.

That is a very well done conversion. Another 21st century mod is a Bluetooth radio that will handle the phone hands free. Have you done that ? Looks like you do have an aftermarket radio in place. If yours doesn't handle the phone a newer one is plug and play since you have already done the hard part.

Ya actually I'm waiting for the double din kit to come in so I'll have bluetooth, reverse camera, DVD player, ipod (in the glove box), GPS and some apps.

That is very interesting and a good way of handling a backup camera. Since I already have a single DIN with all the bells in mine, my thought was to place a backup camera screen in the old radio spot with wires routed out the back of the box. I also have another idea for a GPS which I will reveal after I try it .

Please post your installation on the double DIN. That will be a good resource.

I just have to ask since I've been seeing a lot of DIN talk around here lately. What exactly is Double DIN or Single DIN? I know its obviously something to do with the stereo system but beyond that I'm clueless. Thanks

Essentially, single DIN is your standard 7"x2" radio (1DIN), and double DIN is typically 7"x4" (2DIN).

Also, just a fair warning (from experience in my younger days), watch out for those eBay switches and USB ports. They have a tendency to get very, VERY hot. It mostly depends on the seller themselves but just wanted to give a quick heads up. I also did a similar mod to my Eclipse GST back in the day with a double USB port (circular shape) replacing the old cig lighter on the radio bezel. Looks a lot more modern for a car with a 90's interior. :)

Single DIN is a standard that was created by the German standards body Deutsches Institut für Normung, which is where the "DIN" initials came from. The standard specifies a height and width, but not length, for car head units. So when such a unit is referred to as a single DIN car stereo, or a single DIN car radio, that means it is the height, and width, outlined in the DIN standard.

Here is the entire article from which I stole the paragraph above:

https://www.lifewire.com/what-is-a-1-din-car-stereo-534607

A single DIN is your typical aftermarket radio that you see all over the place. It is standard width and about 3 inches top to bottom. A 1.5 DIN is one and half more top to bottom and a Double DIN is twice the top to bottom height of a single DIN .

Mine is a single DIN which is the most common radio size. The advantage of what the OP is going to do is that he will be able to combine GPS/Radio/Backup Camera screen all in one unit. The disadvantage is that it is a bit large and may not look as clean as a single DIN installation . We'll find out when he posts his pictures.

OP we are eagerly awaiting pictures of how this all turns out. Here is what mine looks like:

I will do, I have the kit ordered but haven't exactly narrowed down the Double Din head unit yet. I want a full touch screen so that will be a full 7" screen instead of the 6.5 with knobs and buttons taking up valuable real estate on the face of the unit. I have installed them many times before and currently have a kenwood 7" in my 2500HD that I really like but don't know yet if I can justify the $2000 price tag for my weekend fun truck. Anybody else have a Double Din that they would care to recommend?
