This would be an ideal tranny for an all wheel drive sport truck...

Yes, something that was going to be driven in a sporting fashion with a fair amount of power would utilize it well, particularly a truck with a healthy low end.

GMT 800 manuals were:

1500: NV3500
6.0L 2500 and 3500: NV4500
8.1L and Duramax 2500 and 3500 and Topkick 4500 and 5500: ZF6-650

I have one in my 06 3500 Duramax, and while I like it, it gains little over the NV4500, and would be a bear to swap, so IMO stick with the NV4500.

Interesting comments, all, and thanks for your thoughts. The truck presently has the nv4500 5 speed manual behind the 454. As the 8.1 is essentially a 454 tall block, that zf version is supposed to bolt up to it. (I ordered this truck back in the fall of 1999.) Anyway, the nv4500 gear spacing can be a tad wide between gear changes, and having driven the zf6 that is behind the 5.9 cummins, kinda like what is going on there having an extra gear before hitting overdrive. Meanwhile, the replacement frame has a Tuff Country 4" lift kit on it which is being removed (and will not be reused) prior to cleaning and repainting.

Which vehicle did you drive that had a ZF6 behind a Cummins? I thought Dodge used the NV4500, NV5600, and G56 in the diesel trucks from the early 90's until now?

I stand corrected. My son had the '02, and I mistakenly thought it was the zf6. that substantial mis-identification notwithstanding, I'm still after the concept of 6 speed behind the 454.

Well, if your putting in all the work to swap to a new frame you might as well do whatever you want to do while its apart. Youll need a body lift or a bigger trans tunnel but i dont see why it wouldnt work if you can get your hands on a zf6. Just make sure the input shaft will work with the 454. Personally i would keep the nv4500 because of gear ratios, parts price and availability. But its your truck man. Id love to see a duramax zf swapped 400... just sayin:hmm:

I'll be doing a bit of measuring on a GMT-800 (01 2500HD) shortly, to check body mount cushions and trans tunnel dimensions, among other items. Thanks for your thoughts.
