What happened here?

Cab is cracked? How does that even happen, and how do I fix it best? Tap it back together, and weld it, grind it, fill it, prime it, and paint it?

That's body filler (Bondo) that cracked. Sand it down completely and see what u have under there. Can be rust or dented really badly. So badly that the previous body guy sculpted the cab corners' form. They sell cab corner replacement panels for cheap on www.lmc.com. Just need to find a good, quality shop to do it right the first time

It apears to be a replacement cab corner that wasn't welded on properly probably from not removing the bed

What he said. Rust expands and if you overlap two pieces of metal and it rusts between then this is the result.

all of the bondo, assess at your own risk

If a magnet doesnt stick to it, its bondo. Cut it out and get a new section put in.

Had a crack like that on the side of my ext cab and it was bondo cracking. Didn't think of the magnet idea, just went ahead an started sanding and it was chipping off.
