Sm465 shifter stuck!!!

Doing a clutch job on my old truck and I have already removed tin collar on shift tower but I cannot pull the shifter out. Has anyone came across this problem.....and possibly fixed it.

Did you have the shift lever in the neutral position before trying to remove it?
